Looking for the knife to complete my EDC

Oh yeah.... I remember that ! :)

On REKAT, I'm a big fan of their knives and have had several, still have a Carni and Carni cub in my collection. I don't know if they're going under or not but I don't have a lot of hope for them. At the beginning of the year they had a lot of support on the forums, their knives sold like hot cakes and people raved about customer service. Now, they never visit their own forum, only one new knife introduced this year and the knives of theirs I decided to sell did not move very fast.

Rest assured, if you buy one of their knives and do a good QC inspection when you get it, if it meets your standards it will be one great knife for you. REKAT's QC is sketchy at best and a lot of boogers get shipped out to people, just give it a good once over.

Thanks Chad for the answers on REKAT.

I'm leaning toward the Chinook right now, as it seems to be well suited for both self-defense and heavy-duty use in a survival situation. Plus it's got that wicked-bad look too it :D

Although I have to admit I like the glass breaker on the that MOD CQD Mark II. I suppose that the pommel on the Chinook might be able to do that in a pinch as well though....

Question for the BM 710 owners: I've handled a 710 before, and almost got a 710HS at one time. However, the thumb ramp seemed to be a bit uncomfortable (and I'm not about to try to do any Dremel work). I've never been able to actually use one, but it also doesn't seem to be as suited for the roles I've outlined. Please, no flames here, I guess I'm just probing for more details on why the 710 would be a knife I could depend on if the manure hits the propeller blades...

Thanks,

Matthew

Starfish: You cannot go wrong with the TOPS Magnum spearpoint. I have had one for a couple of years and it is the toughest folder I own. However, I don't think you can find a new one for under $180.00. Trust me: You will love this knife.

Another choice would be the Emerson Commander. This is my EDC and it is really great. Buy it from Botach to get the right price. At $140.00 it is worth the money. At $170.00 I think it is overpriced. I know that there are those who have complain about Emerson quality etc. Don't even worry about it. Buy the knife and use it. You will love the idea of a folder which is already open when you pull it out of your pocket.

I recently purchased a Chinook, and it will satisfy all three of your requirements. It does have the MBC rating from Spyderco. If you are looking for a pure defensive knife with some blade, then the Benchmade 800 AFCK has to be one of the slickest knives out there. The smoothest action of any knife that I have ever handled. Benchmade has discontinued the 800, and the only reason is because they are calling it a 804 now with oval shaped hole. It is the same knife with a different hole. The 800 has the Spyderco round hole, and can be had right now at discount prices, but the supply is going to dry up sooner or later. The two knives that I have mentioned above can be had for less than $100.00 if that is a consideration. Also, a custom fixed blade in the 3.5 to 4 inch category might be another consideration. Good custom knives dependent upon blade and handle material can be had from $125.00 and up. Big D1

If you want this knife to be in conjunction with your small Sebenza, then all the more reason for a fixed blade. In your size and price range, might I suggest the Busse Basic #5. It's big enough, yet small enough and certainly tough enough.

If it's a folder you shall and shall you a foilder, then the BM 710 is a good knife, but seriously overlapping your small Seb. In that vein, I would also suggest the Chinook or my very favorite for the kick it up a notch folder, the Buck-Strider. You really have toi handle the B-S to appreciate it and it is not overlapping the small Seb as much as some of the other suggestions, good though they may be.

Bottom line, get an appropriately sized full tang fixed blade or a Buck-Strider Folder. They meet your mission/task requirements as well as stated budget.

Happy Hunting

I have been considering the Busse Basic series (as well as other fixed blades) either in addition to a heavy-duty folder, or in place of the folder. However, I am sure that I want to have either on my person when away from the house - as others have said, the best ... is whatever you have on you :)

With that in mind, what kind of concealed carry options are available for a short fixed blade that do not require the use of a jacket or other like clothing? I am living here in South Carolina, so a good part of the year will be spent wearing shorts (usually slacks-type shorts), and so heavy clothing as a concealment aid is not an option for me.

Regarding the Busse Basics: I was actually considering either the Basic #3 or the Badger, primarily because I want to keep it under 4 inches (again, because I want to have maximum carryability). Is the extra effort involved in concealed carry of a fixed blade still worth it if the fixed blade is under 4 inches?

Sorry for all the questions - folders have received the bulk of my interest and research since joining the knife enthusiast community less than a year ago. I know next to nothing about fixed blades...

Thanks all!
