Nope, I'm not a "newbie". I've carried a knife since I was 10 (40+ years), I rifle since I was 14 & a handgun since I was 19. I know what I need, I know what works, and what doesn't - I just can't find it.
What I need is strong, locking folder with thumb studs or flipper (assisted or not, makes no difference) for one handed opening. I have large hands and that means a generous handle, which means a blade in 3.5" or longer length. I need a partially serrated edge to saw with (NOT any of those stupid 1/4" wide bread knife serrations!) 1/3 to 1/2 the length of the blade should do. A simple drop point is best, a clip point may suffice, I don't like the chisel pointed "Tanto" style much at all. Handle shape and material matter. I don't want my hand slipping onto the blade when I'm using it so good texture and/or finger grooves will be a necessity for drawing and using the knife. Synthetic scales are preferred over metal as I occasionally will be cutting live wires. Finally, I'll need a pocket clip for right side tip down carry. I know there are a lot of great knives out there that are only available for tip up carry, but it just doesn't work for me. I've tried (once for over a year) to get used to tip up carry and it just won't work. It's too fumble prone for the size knife I need to carry. It's not a deal breaker, but I really don't like the false edge, or swage look on so many knives available today. I think they make the knife less comfortable to use and weaken the blade. Unfortunately "everyone" seems to be doing it these days...
