Looking for the right Buck knife

Hi there. I am looking for a Buck knife that is light weight (i.e., not heavy). I have a 110, since no collection is complete without at least one. But the thing is really overbuilt and too heavy for my everyday tasks (think office work - yeah, I'm one of THOSE :p). I'm looking for something in the 2.0 - 3.0 oz. range, and something that locks, so no slipjoints. Lighter is definitely better, since this knife would be carried in dress slacks. Ideally a pocket clip would be great too, but it is not a deal breaker. Buck is a great company with great quality knives and I'd like to support them, so any suggestions on something that might meet my needs?

Check out the Vantage 340. Lock, clip, light and under $25. To be honest to everyone, I have had two and have given them both away when someone else saw them and their eyes lit up. Dang relatives.....they did cook a good steak....

Of course what you really need is a 300 in a nice leather pocket pouch....

This is the commerical model. Email address available on request.

This is the one I made using a pouch, heavy monofilment, super glue and shrink tubing.

It's very office friendly. No knife outline, stays over under hem of pants.

If you wanted to be really high class, use gold chain and a sharkskin pouch,,,but don't expect pic from me I'm barely middle class.

How 'bout a 501 or 503? Lockback, traditional looking and a cool little knife.

Did the Mayo TNT or Wamiea work for you? They may fit your needs.

I would also look at the Vantage, love mine, but it may be a bit heavier than you are wanting.

Hi Mark,

If you are looking for a very nice light knife with a pocket clip try the Buck Rush it's 2.4oz and has asap for one hand use...it's cool and I know you will like it. As I have spent a number of years in an office I EDC the Rush's big brother the Tempest it's bigger at 3.6oz and will wear a hole in your slacks in about 1.5 years (time tested results ;))

If you like the look of that 110/111 then you should look at the office friendly Buck 55 at 1.9oz and a lock back; or, as PBD said one of the small 500 series knives...501 at 3 oz, 503 at 2 oz or 505 at 1.5oz. You should also look at a 525 gent at 1 oz.

Do you have a good knife store near you that carries Buck knives? If so you should go and check them out for size and feel before you buy site unseen.

Let us know what you pick!

Good suggestions - thanks guys. I found this version of the 525 that looks pretty good. It has scroll engraving for that extra elegant look.

One question. Does the blade really sit at this rather odd angle to the handle, or is that just the picture?

The 503 looks pretty good too. The Vantage looks nice, but I don't particularly like oval opening holes on knives. Just a personal preference thing. The Rush doesn't do anything for me with its skeletonized frame.

Keep the suggestions coming... The thing that amazes me is the very reasonable cost of all these knives. Good stuff!

That appears to be a 515 if it's the same size (2 7/8" cosed) as a 525. It's from the Classic series and there were several sizes made like that. One warning though, the handles being aluminum will get marked up quickly if you carry it in with keys, change, etc.

The blade must not be opened all the way in the picture. It shouldn't be that way, if it is there's a problem.

Thanks for the info.

One nice thing about the 525 is that you can find it with many different scales, it's one of the most popular knives to have ads or pictures put on due to it's smooth side and low cost. I did one for our PD 100th Anniversary and sold about 75 of them easily to a bunch of cheap cops!

I used to be upper-lower class; due to current economy I'm now middle-lower class... :(

If you like the 110 but think it's too heavy, get a 560...same size blade, but Titanium replaces the wood & brass for a slimmer lightweight heavyweight... :D

(You could also get a BuckLite, but even us lower-class dudes curl our lips at plastic)... :p

You should definitely consider a Buck 55.

345,346,347 they are all fairly light around 4 oz. The oval hole you are refering to is just one way to open the blade, the entire Vantage line has flippers as the primary opening mechanism. So if you are looking for everyday office carry this would be my suggestion.

Mark,

Watch the bay for a Bucklite 442, I believe around 3" blade-very light but very solid. Black thermoplastic handle with clip.

For your "office carry" knife, I think you hit it right with the small 500 sereis. They are classy looking for the most part, especially the Classic series if you can find one.

The 525's came in many different handle variations and are more "gentlemanly" looking and less "tactical" looking than some mentioned and would more than likely draw less adverse attention in an office environment.

+1:thumbup: Plum, I was going to recommend the 503 but of course has no pocket clip.
