Looking For the thickest Folder under $60

The most robust folder I ever used in the field was fashioned out of AUS-8A steel. Through many hunting excursions, the Kershaw Folding Field (KS 1050) gets very high marks in my book although the price point exceeds your parameters by a wide margin. That being said, you might consider using a fixed blade if you are intent on rough use. Folders by definition/design won't hold up as well as even a marginally designed fixed blade. I have a drawer full of slip joints and other folders that sport broken blades and bent tips that can testify to this assertion.

If by thickest you are referring to the blade thickness then look at the Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter. That thing has a thick blade. Going from memory I'm thinking its 4mm or maybe 4.5mm thickness. Thick! I did a review and comparison of it side by side with a Mini Manix as I recall and its over in the review forum. Its been over a year ago I think.

In fact the whole of the folder is beefy as the lock bar and spring are out of necessity to match up the blade are also quite thick and beefy. Even the liners hidden under the Thermorun scales are thick.

Price was about $60. VG1 steel which is quite good by the way, and its razor sharp with one of the strongest locks I've ever tested.

That Extrema Ratio Reventon folder has a blade of 6.3 mm!!!

i think that by limiting your search at or below $60, you limit your choices. most big, stong, thick, quality folders will be more than $60.

at $80 or less, you could try kershaw g10 tyrade, or spyderco manix2. spyderco endura. kershay jyd2cb .

clean cut knives look the best in my opinion

Dont get me wrong there are some excellent looking kershaws and spydercos out there.

I have a Griptillian and it' a very good knife, but the Kershaw Needs work is the one I edc every day at work. Its not the prettiest knife but it is a very good work knife. I highly recommend it.
Now if you want a tough good looking knife get a ZT 0350. That one is around $120.00, but worth every penny ! :)

I'll second the Kabar Dozier Bobcat. I assume this knife is made by the same folks that make Kabars Mule folder. Nothing fancy, just a good solid folder. Blade is 4mm thick on the Bobcat, aka, .157".

With you criteria the only things that come to mind as a brute of a knife under $60 would be Kershaw's NRG 2, or Junkyard Dog 2. Both come in Sandvik 13C26 (which is a very respectable steel) and both have nice clean lines. The Endura would be good too but never really struck me as a brute. Like others have said, if you want to step up to a bit more than $60 you can get the Junkyard Dog with a D2 edge.

STR gave you some very good advice for a tough inexpensive folder. The Ultimate Hunter is strong, thick bladed and very secure. Definitely worth at least 60 bucks.

The Ontario RAT 1 folder is about as thick as a tenacious, but It just feels a hell of a lot stronger. I dropped mine right on the tip of the blade from 3-4 feet and it barly nipped it. Plus, it will only cost you about 25-35 bucks.

Specs: drop point blade, aus 8, strong metal liner lock and liners, flow through design, right/left handed ergos, etc.

The Kershaw Speed Bump is a very though knife and can easily be had for under $60. There are two versions, one with aluminum handles, which is the nicer one for me, and one with a composite handle with is probably heavier duty. I would also look at the JYDII, its liner-lock is thicker than most frame-locks. 13c26 on the non-composite version is a very nice steel and these can be easily had for under $60. If you want a 'premium' steel the CPM-D2 version is very good.

CRKT M21 line is a great bunch of knives for the $. I've had my CRKT M21-14 for a few years now and it's still solid. BTW, you can disable the AutoLAWKS feature if you don't like it. I must admit that if the Kershaw Junkyard Dog II or Tyrade fits your hands then go with them. You get D2 steel at the edge and at a good price.
