Hello there everyone, haven't been posting much in the past few months to do being busy with school but now I have sometime to do some catching up.

Over the past few years I have been really into the outdoors and camping, yet I rarely get to go camping anywhere. I'm looking for some places in Upstate NY where I can go out for maybe a night or two every now and then and just work on my "survival" skills :D. I did some researching online and haven't really found any areas too close to where I live, just outside of Albany.

So I'm wondering if you fellas could lend a helping hand.

Red Edge,

If you are not looking at the Adirondacks or Catskills, You might consider the 29 mile long trek along the Taconic Crest Trail (Northern Rensselaer County into Mass.) or Pittsfield State Forest (about 30 minutes from Albany). If you are looking at the Adirondacks, I can give you a couple tips, what direction are you looking to travel?

If you are looking for something down in the Catskills, here would be my choices. The listing is from least difficult to most difficult.
Colegate Lake.
North/South Lake
Vernooy Kill Falls
Overlook Mountain-My personal favorite.
All information found here.

Kaaterskill High Peak. A strenuous workout.

Most of the longer trails have designated camping locations, any camping that exceeds 2 nights may require a DEC permit.

Hhhmmm I think the Taconic Crest Trail and the Pittsfield State Forest are exactly what I'm looking. As of right now I'm just researching everything and plan on just doing a couple day hikes when spring rolls around. Thanks for the links and suggestions.

I was hiking in Pittsfield State forest yesterday. If you don't wait for Spring, bear in mind that both those places run a little colder than Albany. Enjoy.

I've lived in the adirondacks my whole life...know them very well. I can tell you about any area your interested in.
