I'm looking for a used KMG clone with all accessories. I'm a disabled nam vet and trying to make life easier for me with my hobby I just started 6 months ago. I'm using a 2x42 belt grinder now but, it sure would help if a KMG 2x72 came my way. I can't afford the $ price so, maybe there's one out there that will be a lot lower priced. Please, let me know if there's one for sale, thanks...Rey

Keep your eye on ebay and on the sale section here. A KMG comes up every once in a long long while for sale. Most KMG's stay with their owners, however, so you may look for a while before finding one. Other options that come up slightly more often would be Coote grinders or Burr Kings that are 2x72" as well and work really well for the maker.

Good luck in your search!

The KMG grinders tend to sell used for nearly the same as new. There was an ebay auction a while back where a used one went for more than a new one  You may want to look into Tracy Mickley's no-weld grinder plans.

Dito on Tracy's plans. He also sells kits that have pretty much all the basic parts now. It won't be free to build, but it will still end up much cheaper than probably even a used KMG. Search for No Weld Grinder or something like that, and you can see some of the builds other members have done.

I waited patiently for a long time before finally buying a new KMG, checking Craigslist and here frequently, ready to pounce on that good deal when it came along. It never did.

From what I saw, used Burr Kings approach the price of a new KMG. Used KMG's rarely come up, and when they do, they sell pretty darn close to the price of a new one. It seemed to me the only realistic options for a less expensive machine are the Coote, Grizzly, or home made No Weld Grinder from Tracy Mickley. Tracy just recently started selling a finished frame for the NWG (check the exchange here or his site), but I didn't bother to figure out how much work or money building that frame up to a complete machine would cost in the end.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info gentlemen and I will keep on looking or maybe get a local machinist to help me make one. Thanks again, Rey

Rey, I built one of the no-weld grinders and it's now my main machine. Just to let you know, it's surprisingly easy to build, took me a couple days. You don't really need special tools or skills. And it works excellent, smooth and strong.

I recommend it for a lower cost option, and if Tracy has all the metal cut it would be that much easier.

Rey - you might consider contracting wtih a local welding shop to build it for you. Get the plans and take it to them with a couple six-packs. :D

Craigslist is a great place for tools....there were 4 KMGs up for grabs in my area just a month or two ago...

It's also a great place to find welders. Look in the Barter section. ;)

And maybe there might be someone here willing to put one together for you. If I had the welding skills and time, I would do it (and make one for me at the same time).
I'm not crazy about the idea of the no-weld plans, though....*shrug*

In all, you'll probably end up spending $400+ since you'll have to buy the pulleys new (can be found at surpluscenter.com)
Something to consider....

How come nobody told me about the "used KMG" pricing rule?

I knocked nearly $1000 off mine when I unloaded it. :(

Of course....I beat on it incessantly for several years...wasn't very pretty anymore....:foot:

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the used KMGs that sold for more than their new price were sold out of the states, where they can't buy them directly....

There was one that went yesterday on the 'Bay for $1125. It had the 10" wheel, platen, and a 2hp VFD. The only hitch was it was pickup only in Stockton, CA.

I was outbid in the last 30 seconds.

Shucks, I hate when that happens.
