Imperial was perfect for this, their shell construction Jackmaster Barlow was practically the American equivalent of the Opinel, but they're no longer made here.
I don't think there are any such knives still made in the US.
The closest thing I know of would be the case mini blackhorn which can be hand with many different company advertisements on the handle.

The key to enjoying France is to stay out of Paris.
I really like the look of those Dexter Russell knives, even though they don't fold.

This is another good alternative.

Minus the combat my grandfather pretty much enjoyed his time in France and the bar he ran with his brother, that is until he got drunk on a train and woke up in Paris.
From what I've been told he that wasn't a great experience for him.

As to the knives, I'd love to get a few green ones.
I'd put one in my tackle box for sure.

Really they are only "equivalent" in terms of price. The MAM knives are much much more equivalent.

The Case Sodbuster Jr is $10.00 or so bucks more expensive than a number 8 Opinel, but is U.S.A. made and non-scary and similar in size.

Cold Steel also used to make the Twist Lock (Twistmaster series).

is there an American option that is similar? Foldable, wood handle, 2.5 to 4 inch blade, lower price.

There are lots of good suggestions, but no one has been able to meet all your requirements. You might need to adjust your priorities. I should know, I find myself in this position quite often.

I think that's a winner.

I was thinking about the Sodbuster, but I figured it would be way more expensive, but the Case Jr. model doesn't seem so bad.

Vive la France!

Whatever happened to the OP? Must not have liked the answers he was getting.

One thing to remember is that he would prolly want a slicey food prep/fruit knife. The Kudu is comparably priced and a good option. But the quaint look of the Opi and it's appeal to hipsters and millennials would make it hard to beat for a "souvenir" knife. They have sold them in Bed Bath and Beyond.

Did admin pull down the guy holding opinels and flipping me off...that was funny. Thanks for suggestions gentlemen. To be sure the opinel is an excellent knife, and there other french things that are good...sabatier, wine, cider, haute cuisine, Statue of Liberty. I was just wondering if an American made knife compared so I don't have to fund socialism and cultural degeneration. Vive la Opinel. Thanks again.

If you are so focused on staying American, then Case is the obvious choice. Their Sodbuster is one of the best budget folders ever made. I love my American Workman Sodbuster but the Junior version is even more affordable... and comes in a zillion scales/colour versions. Check it out, 100 % American and Johnny Cash approved.

I say get the opinels and get a small metal stamp of your orchard name or logo and brand the handles of the knives with it. If I visit somewhere and decide to buy a trinket of sorts I always get one with the name of the place as a remembrance.
