Who here has used the X-42 field knife and what was your opinion of it? I'm looking for feedback or more reviews on this knife. I've read what's available so far but hoping some of you can freshen the information pot, so to speak. It looks like a great knife, except for the choil taking up so much valuable edge space, IMHO.

Nobody, I don't have one yet. But have heared that it makes a great camp knife. I'm sure the experts will be along shortly with information and pics.:)
 
This is surprising. It looks like a really nice design and I'd have thought lots of folks would have one and have been using it by now.
 
I have one, but haven't used it all that much yet. It is a work in progress for me, so to speak. I have had it coated in Tungsten DLC from BodyCote, and will make Cocobolo scales for it (I have the wood).

It is an excellent camp knife. Serg had a good review of it, if I remember. I think the choil could be a little smaller, but it DOES allow you to choke up on the knife, making it effectively smaller.

Depending on what your intended used are, it is a great camp knife, though I will probably thin out the edge for better slicing, since chopping chores are handled by a larger knife.:D

I have one of the original sheaths, which is OK, but I like the one for the Field Pup better. I think the new ones come with the same style sheath. :cool:

You might also do a search of the reviews and testing forum to get more information, or post a request there if you find nothing...

Seriously though, Do you have any pics of the knife with the DLC coating? I've also though that wood handle slabs would look great on that knife. Pics man, we want pics.:)
 
I'm also interested in looking at your DLC coating job as I had been considering the same thing.

I don't know if/when Bodycote will start taking individual orders again though.
 
My rubber arm is coming out of its socket with all this twisting...:D
Hard to see the DLC coating, it looks almost like black chrome...

Thank you BB. That is a nice photo. Did you just let them coat it stock out of the box or did you mirror finish it first?

No, I had them coat it as it came to me. I had originally planned to mirror finish it first, but never got to it...:rolleyes:
 
I have clicked “Search” button, exactly above “Remember 9-11-2001” band, typed SOG Field Knife as keywords and... the software displayed some mess about “fatal error”.
I couldn’t understand clearly what exactly search engine considers as “fatal error” – Field Knife issuing by SOG or my search about this one... :confused:

Next I shortened my request to “field knife” and again received “fatal error” message what convinced me that Forum software considers all field knives as fatal errors :(

Well, next search I have performed on SOG and field keywords and now search engine displayed 37 threads on General Discussion Forum only... Hurray!!!
This convinced me that Forum search engine both doesn’t love SOG Field Knife and hardly tolerates Basic Members using “Search” function. So hurry up until this capricious software didn’t change it’s opinion into worse direction...

But I don’t agree with this malicious software both in SOG Field Knife and Basic Member matter!!!

Edited to correct – the “Search” button is located below and not above “Remember...” band.
Differently someone could consider that I have used some fatally different “Search” function.
 
Check out the Jan or Mar issue of Tactical Knives. Believe there's a nice article on the X-42 Field knife.

Personally, I have the X-42 Recondo in TiNi and like it's versatility. Different knives, different uses, different applications.

All of 'em are wonderful...
 
Too bad, I went to the store to try to catch the last issue of Tac. Knives but they were all gone. Was the article favorable... of course, most the articles are favorable in knife magazines. :)
