Yes your average stropping should be on clean strops.
I use my linen strop first, and do about half as many laps as I plan to do on clean leather. So 50 then 100. But you don't have to use it. There are lots of choices for compound, like the ones from dovo. SRD also sells a couple I think.
Personally I'd make a paddle strop for compounds. A paint stir stick and either some leather, or thin sheet balsa sanded smooth would work. There are lots of compounds and lots of ways to use and make strops. the most basic would be chrome oxide on a stick. When it comes to compounds, you do want to go for stuff marketed specifically for razors, the normal grinding and woodworking compounds might not have as even a particle size, and you might get chunks. Or so I'm told.
