Right now, I'm using a Rothco messenger bag as my daily go-bag while going to work or anywhere of considerable distance. It currently houses the following items:

-Extra Change of Clothes: jeans, shirt, socks, and underwear.
-Spyderco Endura
-Johnson & Johnson Travel First Aid Kit
-Coleman Waterproof Matches
-Flint/Steel Firestarter with Vaseline-coated cottonballs and fatwood shavings.
-Knife sharpener (Smith's)
-Hygiene supplies (travel toothbrush/toothpaste, baby wipes, deoderant)
-TomTom GPS with car adapter and AC adapter.
-15 inch Kamagong (Filipino hardwood) stick.
-One Bandanna
-Small Umbrella
-Emergency Space Blanket
-Leatherman Kick

I'm looking to add the following items to the bag:
-QuikClot
-100 ft of 550 Paracord
-Mechanics/Work Gloves
-Work Mask
-Filter straw
-Some type of food.

I'm wondering as to what kind of QuikClot may be more suitable for a messenger bag...how does the QuikClot Sport sound? I've never had any experience with QuikClot products at all so I was wondering how well they'd fit in the messenger bag. Also, what kind of food would be suitable to carry in a messenger bag? I'm quite fond of Clif Bars (especially Black Cherry Almond...my girlfriend can't stand it, so there's always more for me :)) but I was wondering if there were any other food items that were more substantial that I could carry in the bag without adding too much weight to it.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

If I remember right there will be plenty of room for the QC sport in a Rothco messenger bag. I would also add at least one fixed blade knife, some H2O tablets a cooking/boiling vessel and maybe a water bag/bladder like a Platypus rolled up. Add two more bandannas while you are at it.

For extra food go with some store made Gorp/trail mix type products. What works real good is a store that has all kinds of dried fruits and nuts then you can mix and match your own Gorp to be very nutritious. Gives energy, Vitamins, salt, fat and proteins.

I really don't like most Cliff/Energy type bars because of all the preservatives and other stuff added.

I'd change out the jeans for Railriders/5.11/or some such non-cotton cargo style pants. They can pass for city casual and are much more functional (useful in bad weather and dry quickly). As a plus you'll create alot of extra space in your go-bag.

as with all electronics theres the chance they could break, so a small foldable map and a compass might be nice additions to have. just a though : )
also something small like a maglite solitaire might be nice to have.

cheers : )

If you have never had experience with QuikClot, i HIGHLY suggest you get a EMT or First Aid person to show your the ropes, and to advise you of the dangers and side effects. Its a great product, but in untrained hands a DANGEROUS product!

Agreed. I have something other than QC right now, can't think of the name. It doesn't create heat. Those store bought first aid kits are generally just a few bandaids, so a couple of 4x4 and large abd pads (big thick rectangular pads, femine pads might substitute) or military trauma bandages would be the next logical step. You need some dressings to try to stop hemorrhaging in a major wound.

In my go bag, I have several abd pads and a couple of military style trauma pads. You'll also need enough roller gauze to bandage the chest or abdomen if necessary. You'll need to be able to go all the way around the trunk a few times. It works far better than tape, which often won't stick to bloody skin.

Thanks for the responses guys. Actually, I do have a small AM/FM hand crank radio in the bag, I just forgot to mention that. Another thing I forgot to mention is that I live in New Jersey, where carrying a fixed blade would be illegal, so as much as it would help to have a fixed blade, I can't legally carry it.

As for the QuikClot Sport, I'll def buy some...although I have heard it can burn. Hopefully I'll never have to use it but if I do, at least I'll have some peace of mind.

Keep the suggestions coming. I'm heading out to Home Depot today to pick up some work gloves and work masks for the bag.
