Thick blade, micarta handle: RD6
Thick blade, respirene handle, Scrapper 6.

Those are similar, handle is the big difference. The ranger is a little cheaper, more available and comes with a sheath. That's the one I picked.

If you want a thinner blade, go for a Rat Cutlery RC6, BUT NOT A ONTARIO RAT.

I agree with thombrogan, you should ask Justin how much it would be for a RD in S7, the answer will probably be very fast and maybe surprise you.

While I think you're making a great choice with the stock 5160 RD-6 and may be right about the S7 custom version, I can't imagine that it would hurt to ask.

Thanks Thom,I'll give'm a call & see what they have to say.

yo JTR, you said 5-7". if you're okay with a 5" blade, check out the scrapyard dumpster mutt. I have four, use two, and love them. the double-cut one can be had for 99 bucks, and they're getting ready to release another batch now that they've moved shop up to wauseon from texas. you can get one with a nice custom sheath for right around 140-150 bucks. I know you said you already decided, but if you're willing to think about it for another day or two...you never know. :) go to the scrap yard forums and talk to the guys there, most of them are really great and a bunch of them own both ranger and scrap yard knives and can give you some comparison pics and reviews.

Thanks for the suggestion Din,but 6"-7" is actually the perfect size camp knife for me.I shouldn't have even put 5"

Hey thombrogan,I just emailed Ranger, stating what I was looking for.I'm waiting for a reply.Hopefully it's not too much extra,& even if it is,I'll settle for the 5160.I also noticed their excellent warrantee,so I'm not too worried about the knife breaking on me.Thanks again for the tip:D:thumbup:

Justin is AWESOME to deal with and was extremely patient in helping me consider my options.

I have a Dumpster Mutt (in S7 I believe) and a Custom Afghan from Ranger in 5160. I'm sure if I took them both into the tool shed and wreaked havoc on them with hammers, cinderblocks, and blowtorches that the Dumster Mutt would be tougher, but for the kind of hard use that involves chopping wood, digging in the dirt, and even the mundane tasks which a knife was actually designed for, not only can I NOT tell a difference in performance or durability, I much prefer the design on my Ranger.

I'm not an expert on heat treats but the ones I have talked to all told me that Justin could do things to 5160 that bordered on magical.

I love my Busses, Swamprats and Scrapyards, but ever since Becker disapeared, I don't think there is a better value for the money than Ranger when it comes to a hard use utility knife. Let us know what you decide!

I understand your point, but I think that assessment rests heavily on whether you can get a Scrap Yard blade at the factory price or not. ;)

Hi everone,I just got an email from Justin at Ranger. He said he'd be more than happy to make me a RD6 in S7 & it would take about a week.Unfourtunately the cost would be $300:(,which is waaay over my budget.)I'm going with the RD6 in 5160 for the standard $99.99:)
Like some of you said previously that Justin is a class act.I wish more dealers were like him.Anyway I thought I'd let you all know how things worked out.
Have a nice day :)

:D Justin @ Ranger ,you mean... good job !

I'm for the Scrapper. Is my favorite user. Efficient and confortable.
But everything ok with the RD6, too.
Just...
Have you seen the scrapper 6 destruction test?

http://www.knifetests.com/scrapyardscrapper6test.html

Yes I have seen the test on the scrapper. It was quite impressive.Although I said I've been known to be pretty hard on my camp knives, that's just overkill!!If I want to break up a sidewalk,I'll use a sledgehammer or jack hammer:D.Plus in my original post I said a comfortable sheath is very important to me(about 30% in my standards) & Ranger has that all taken care of.I don't like RAT's sheaths or SwampYards sheaths.

P.S. If you read the whole thread the scrapper was in the lead most of the time.It was the sheath & the extended pommel of the Ranger that won me over.As well as all the great feedback from you guys at bladeforums:thumbup:

:D
I've read, now.
Good choice.

Without reading, I wrote that because, as you can see in the picture, this is how I have my Scrapper with me, tied to the nalgene pouch, with kydex sheat made by myself ( 30 minutes, 8 $, an owen ,a sponge, a file , and a drill ).

For sure, the standard sheat of the Ranger, is much better than the Scrap Yard one.

Go on, and let us know your opinion when you receive your new companion! ;)

That's a nice looking home made sheath:thumbup:

I have a Custom RAK and I despise the sheath. The RAT Cutlery knives far and away come with the best sheathing systems. The Ranger is fantastic but I really hate the sheath it came with.

I know there are die hard RAT fans out there & with good reason. They make excellent affordable knives.I no way at all am I trying to disrespect them.I'm just not crazy about their sheaths.

IMO The most perfect sheath(for me) comes with the ZT0100,another one that is way out of my budget.

I just pulled the trigger on the RD6:thumbup: I'll tell you that Justin could teach a lot to some of these dealers on how to treat their customers.Class act, helpfull gentleman in every sense of the word.He answered my emails within minutes, answered all my questions in detail & even provided me a link to buy from.

:thumbup:A++to Justin at Ranger Knives!!You won't be seeing the last of me:D

I have a small game hunting/camping trip coming up in May.I can't wait to put my new Ranger to use:)

Agreed.

I've been fortunate to pick up the two Scrapyards I have at about 10% above factory price and they were worth every penny.

The only thing I don't love about them is the handles which feel tiny in my big ol' hands. I fixed that with some paracord but I'm not usually a fan of wrapping my handles.

I'd wait a little bit before plopping my money down. Noss just got two of the 'Cheaper than Dirt' $10 "rough use" knives in the size you are seeking and will probably be destruction testing them. If they do as well in his tests as some of the other 'name brands' named above, then save your $10 and buy 14 of the Cheaper than Dirt knives instead.

Hmmm. Unless something has changed, Ranger and Scrap Yard sell damn near IDENTICAL sheaths.

Would those be full size Res C handles or the Dumpster Mutt style handles?
