I currently have a leatherman as my first decent folder. I like it for when I need the screwdriver or opener, but other then that, I could use one with a better blade. I'm looking for a quick open one handed open/close tactical knife. If there is anything you guys need to know to narrow down what would be good for me, feel free to ask. Thanks.

price range. size of the blade. do you want a pocket clip. those will help immensely to narrow it down

Price range is preferably under 200$ Size of blade... hmmm... 3-4 probably. Yes to the clip.

how much are you willing to spend, what would you be using it for, where would you be using it, how good are you at sharpening

I'll be using it for everyday things. Where? As in country? And I am a beginner so I have yet to start sharpening anything ergo... I suck. :p

location has an effect in a few ways, like legal limits on length, if it can have a lock, or restrictions on opening mechanisms.

here's a couple thread about Canadian law http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=153089

seems you can have AOs, so if you really want a fast opener, those are options.

what kind of Leatherman do you have?

And when you said tactical, do you want something that you could use for self defense (even though you apparently can never tell an officer that)
I have this leatherman:

Yes I will be using it for self defense.

what kind of SD training do you have?
None. This isn't a first option. It's a last ditch effort.

(I am assuming you are going to say a knife in the hands of an untrained person can result in it being used against them? ;))

Welcome to the Forums. I would suggest you buy something like a Spyderco Delica or Benchmade Griptillian. They're both really good knives that will give you all you need while not spending a fortune. Maybe even buy both to see how different companies approach knife-making.

Not too much worry of that specifically, more of a concern that the knife wouldn't be effective (they're already marginal with training, depending on your situation), and I mostly wanted to see if you had a leaning to cut or thrust, or maybe forward/reverse grip.

Without that, I'd say just get any quality built folder that flips your switch. Steels like D2, S30V, ZDP189, and some others are pretty wear resistant. They could last longer on abrasive cutting, but they require more work to resharpen, especially if you don't know how.

Alright, I'll definitely look into those. I have been researching these for a few days, and I had three that I was considering, wondering opinions on those for me, or if I should go with something else.

SOG Trident
H&K 14255 axis

And the Emerson ECBF CQC-13

Ah ok I see now. I don't have a preference, but my best guess as to what I would use would be forward thrust or reverse thrust.

Ok, what would you recommend for a sharpener?

Check out the CRKT Triumph

Honestly, $200 will buy you almost any production knife. In fact, it's almost twice as much as you need to spend on high quality knife with "exotic" steel.

E.g. Spyderco Military is nice, big enough to be useful and small enough to carry comfortably.

Or if you want to get latest exotic :), wait for new Spyderco carbon fiber handled Stretch with ZDP-189 blade (it will cost you around $175).

nvm, just saw that post

check out Kershaw and Benchmade. I have a high preference for the axis lock.
