Looking to buy my first CRK, which one would you recommend?

Well, any brick and mortar shops near you?
How about fellow knife - nut near you?
You can look at pictures of the knife in hand and compare or find some vids.....
Knife comparison pictures my help to get an impression of the dimensions.
Some online stores offer a return policy, so you could order both and return one,
Buy your preferred one and be happy.
Buy both and postpone the decision.

Truth is you need a large one anyway.

You all are very convincing. I find myself gravitating towards the small inkosi by a hair, despite the majority of you recommending the sebenza - which to me means this is a tie.

I think the only way to truly feel comfortable with a choice is to handle both in person, which brings me to my next question...what's the best way to do that?

Here is a link to the current list of CRK dealers state by state... dealers are required to have a physical store front at least that was the rule when I became a dealer

I would def say plain jane 21 the inkosi is not for everyone. Esp for a first timer it feels weird when opening and closing. Dont get me wrong its a great folder but not for a first crk (the 25 was my first and hated it).

just the opposite for me... the small inkosi is far easier to open one handed with the thumb stud as compared to the small seb 21 ... but i have large hands

My first was the KA CF large 25 and it felt really weird. Now that i have some exp with CRK it might be OK but then it just felt off. Plus it would have to be the Inkosi not 25. The pocket clip bugged my pinky just like the Zaan

My first CRK was a small 21 with cocobolo inlays. I followed it almost immediately with a large 21 "pre-Idaho" with bocote inlays. I immediately realized that the small was, well, too small for my hand and it never felt comfortable to me. The large was perfect, both in hand, and in it's condition. It had been someone else's safe queen and became mine. It was just too pretty perfect to use. I bought a KnifeArt large 21 CF and completely fell in love with it. It became a user and my work EDC instantly, and was in my pocket the majority of the time for a year despite buying a crapload of knives over the same period.

I've since sold the small and bought a Wilson Combat StarTac (Umnumzaan), a large 25 Plain Jane, a large 21 Insingo with Micarta inlays, and a Mnandi which is a very occasional dress-up carry in its slip in the bottom of my pocket. Every full-size CRK is a favorite and could easily be my only carry if I had but just one knife. I'm going to have to try an Inkosi and am sure that could be my one-and-only too. I think that one should be natural canvas Micarta--just beautiful.

I have yet to buy a CRK new. They all came off the Exchange. My first large 21 and Mnandi were LNIB. The former is my safe-queen and the latter being a "gentleman's carry" gets no real wear or use. I find it much easier to use an expensive knife if it's already had some before it comes to me. Recently I've had great success buying CRK users--my Micarta Insingo plus a ScotchBrited 'Zaan for my son. The knives are much cheaper and go right in pocket and to work without being babied.

So, if I were to give advice on which one, I'm not much help as any large is great for me. But I would certainly recommend the secondary market for purchase both for price and putting a great knife right to work.

I just purchased my first, a small Tanked. While its a great knife and Im happy w/ the purchase.. planning to keep and use..its a tad on the small side for me..Im in the market for a large..just a day after buying the small, as it were..

I agree w/ others who've suggested getting some in hand before purchasing.

Good luck w/ the hunt.

Get which ever one you like the most, there is no wrong place to start. Both knives will be great, but ultimately, you are going to be the one spending hard earned cash on the knife.

Thanks for the advice all. I definitely plan to get one in hand before making a purchase from the exchange. The price differential makes it too good to pass up, and from what I understand, CRKs get knicked up easily anyway

Ha! I'm the opposite of the group majority! I started large ('Zaan then 21), then gravitated towards Small (Inkosi then 21). I think the large vs small debate revolves around your flavor of EDC/use. The Larges feel great in my hand, but are overboard for the vast majority of my urban/suburban/office cary.

For Smalls, the Inkosi fits my hand a bit better (not sure why), feels more burly, and is oh-so-smooth. The Small 21 feels more refined and gentlemanly.

I'm glad I don't have to choose, but if forced I would pick Sm Inkosi over Sm 21 and Umnumzaan over Large 21, both by narrow margins. Once you start, you'll need more. God willing, my small sampling will expand over the coming years.

Oh, by the way, there are no pics in this thread yet, so I'll have to leave this here on my way out. [emoji6]

I recently sold my Small Plain Jane 21. This was my first CRK. I was just a little underwhelmed by the amount of break in necessary to have the smooth Sebenza I heard so much about. My next purchase is going to be a Small CF Inkosi. I have held large CRK's and feel they are too big for EDC, espescially if it going to be an urban carry. But I do plan on eventually buying a Large 21. This way I can have the best of both worlds; Small, light, compact, EDC and Large tried and true for outdoor and apocalyptic needs.

I say get one of the earlier models FIRST..Regular or 21. You'll be able to appreciate the original concept THEN get an Inkosi
