Looking to get a traditional scout hatchet. Suggestions?

I recently purchased an old Plumb Scout Axe for about $20 on eBay. Took a file to shape not back up and it's been good to go.

If weight isn't an issue, check out the boys axe. Essentially a heavy hatchet on a 24" handle. Check around 2nd hand stores and yard sales. I got a real nice True Temper Tomahawk hatchet for a good price. Decide on how you plan on using it. Then figure out what will best fit the bill. The True Temper True American is a good, but rough, hatchet. As suggested check out Old Jimbo. He has some advice for modifying an inexpensive hatchet. Don't get overly concerned about the hardness of the head. The one you noted is designed for hard use and made to be sharpened with a medium cut or course cut file.

I still have a Scout hatchet from when I was a boy 50 yrs ago. It still works great.

I would even consider getting a used head and fitting my own handle as a project. Anyone have any recommendations?

That's what you need to do. A vintage hatchet with convex cheeks will out perform anything currently available - even the spendy Euro-import stuff.

Honestly, shop garage sales. Or check flea markets. Even that internet auction site will have deals on top line stuff. Get an eye for old. Plumb made millions of great hatchets. And they're a lot cheaper without the BSA stamp.
