Hello all,*
I've been wanting to get into knife making ever since I came out of the womb, I'm currently 19 and looking for an internship for knife making. I live in San Diego, but if some one offered me a 2-3 week period to fly out and do some learning I would be more then willing to pay for the flight. I've worked in a lab for the past 4 years, working with my hands. If anyone has any information or can hand me over to someone please let me know.*

All the best,*

I'm not sure about you, but I doubt flying out to watch someone grind steel is really necessary.

Just read up all you can on Knife making, then experiment with the tools available too you. That's what I did, and I found a few different methods for doing things that best suited my preferences.

Good luck, man.

Richard, there is likely a maker or 2 in your area that would help you out. Im guessing if you spread the word around here on BF you will find that person. Just be patient and it will save you a plane ticket and much time.

Maybe try to get to the ABS hammer-in during October just outside of Fresno, its a two day event with many minds and makers showing and telling and you may be able to get some time behind the hammer and anvil or grinder. I'm going to try to make it there. Also there may be a maker near you that would be willing to show you what's involved in making a knife.

There is a guy in Sonoma county, CA. who teaches custom knife making. From what I gather, he's quite good. Says he's been a master blade-smith for over 15 years. He posts on craigslist and can also be reached at www.ktuckerknives.com. I believe he charges $350 for the course.
