Looking to get my first Benchmade... Suggestions?

$75 isn't enough (at regular internet prices) to make the jump to the non-Zytel axis locks - although it can be on Ebay if you're lucky - but it definitely puts you in "which Grip/Mini-Grip/530 do I want" territory, rather than Pikas and such.

And it just lets you look at the Cabela's special Griptillian run in D2 toolsteel, which at exactly $75 is where I'd point you - the D2 mini is $70, the D2 Grip is $80, plus shipping.

(The links are huge - go to Cabelas.com and search "benchmade".)

Thanks for the reply, yeah don't you hate those long ass links? I usually use
http://tinyurl.com/ to convert them down, check it out sometime.

Tinyurl is one of those things I keep meaning to learn how to use, but my basic laziness interferes.

:)

Same here actually... I have it bookmarked, know how to use it, but I just don't..

I had a full-sized AFCK, which promptly got stolen from my work locker.

Then I went back to my trusty Spidy Endura, and just recently retired it for a BM 710 with the 154CM blade. It fits the pocket nice and fits good in my hand. The black finish seems to be easily marked, but it gets used. It's a good one. Find one for < $70 bucks and it will be money well spent.

Buying one of the Griptilians is one of the things I don't think I'll ever regret. I checked 'em out at Bass Pro and bought the MiniGrip. After falling in love with it, I ordered the D2 Grips, large and small from Cabelas. Great knives. The big one is my weekender. My usual EDC is one of the smaller ones.

My advice: Get a Grip!

try to find one in 154CM steel.
I was really impressed by my new BM940 blade in 154CM.
So if you find a BM on e-bay with this steel, i could insure you that you would really enjoy it !

Ive got a question for Keith Mayton but if anyone else knows the answer please feel free to chime in. How do you not use the thumbstud to open the griptilian and only use the Axis lock? I can see if you pulled back on the axis lock it would free the blade but there is too much friction to just flip it out. Am I missing something? Thanks!

you've got the idea, just pull back thr axis lock-bar and flip your wrist. the pivot pin needs to be loose enough to allow this to happen.

So the axis keeps it locked open and closed?
it lock it open, yes, but it will not lock the knife closed. it simply keeps the knife held in the handle by spring tension, which the user overcomes by applying pressure to the thumbstud or blade, thus opening the knife.

Neat! I still haven't found one I'm willing to bid on though... I guess I'm trying to get the very best deal since it's my first and who knows if I personally will like it.
