Looking to have my grandpa's knife refurbished

To be honest - I think you did too much already. The major rust should have barley been removed and just oiled the blade to keep it from degrading more.

That thing Probably wasn’t shiny since 1945.

Stop messing with it, your in your way to “fix it till it’s broke”

Sorry but you asked.

D Docscoot , they are all just opinions. There is no wrong answer when it comes to how you want your knife, except for how you don't want your knife.

Appreciate the opinion. I think tbe point you’re missing is that the level of damage on this knife is not just battle scars from my grandpa’s use of it, but is from absolute neglect in the way it was kept after he passed. I personally feel some obligation to do something about this. I’m still on the fence because I do also agree with the sentiment of your post, but respectfully really what I was after here was some suggestions on makers who might take on this project. I’ve got several suggestions now so I will continue to weigh the options.

Thanks everyone!!

Thanks so much David, I really appreciate you taking the time in this thread! I will give this a little bit more thought at this point before deciding how to proceed, may I reach out to you via PM to chat more?

Thanks!

Just give it some love and care, have a maker make one similar and you have the best of both worlds. The memories and the fact it was his makes for a great time to reflect and share stories, and the new one can be used to keep to honor him. Let us know how it ends up. Thanks for sharing.:)

Are there any chemicals that you could use to break-up and remove the "excess patina"?
