Looking to purchase my first Spyderco

Alrighty....looks like my very first Spyderco will be a Manix 2 XL. I would like some feedback if possible...
ie, pros/cons.

Thanks in advance

Ron

fyi...I'm a Benchmade guy, so, this is a new venture for me.

I would try to handle as many models as possible before purchasing, if at all possible. I bought a PM2 based on the rest of the forum's love for it and found it just didn't work for me. I think we've all bought knives that we thought we'd love until they were in our hands and they end up gathering dust or being resold.
You might also add how you propose to use this new knife (will it be EDC, hiking/camping, etc) which can help folks know better how to provide feedback or other suggestions.

Sorry....EDC, light paper/cardboard/plastic band cutting at work.
I'm EDC a Benchmade 300 Axis Ball flipper right now....I want something larger.

I have a xl and like it lots. Its not one of my edc spydercos tho just because its so bulky. If I go camping hiking or into the woods in general the manix xl is my go to. One of my smoothest opening and closing spydies I have.

If you are wanting something bigger might work out perfectly for you. It is definitely up to edc tasks. And s30v is real good steel I'm my opinion.

The Manix line is a home run with spyderco. I own several variations of the manix and xl. You really can't go wrong with them.

Thanks.
I was going to get the BM Adamas folder....it's just too much. And, I already have a D2 steel blade. So, I'm looking elsewhere.

I own an original Manix which, I think, is about the same size as the current Manix 2 XL. IMO, these knives are designed heavy duty, for serious cutting tasks. They excel in this area. The downside, for me anyway, is the wide profile that takes up a huge amount of pocket space. Even the standard Manix 2--I own the LW translucent blue model--is wider in profile than I like to carry daily, subsequently I don't use it much.

If you don't mind the width and have daily tasks that require this type of knife, it's a good choice. If you're looking for a daily carry to use for lighter duty, you may be disappointed.

Siggy

I'm a Manix man, but my current big buddy EDC is my Gayle Bradley M4.

I also like the Spyderco Stretch with the ZDP-189 steel blade. It is light at around 3 ounces, but strong with the hardest knife steel available. It is a larger knife with a 3.5" blade. I'm guessing the price for the Stretch ZDP-189 blade steel version is a little less than a Manix XL, although the VG-10 version is also a very good Stretch blade steel and even lower priced. It is good sized, but the width is pocket friendly. The Manix is a little bigger.

Here is a good YouTube video about the Stretch that you might enjoy watching. Happy New Year with whatever you get.

I edc my Manix 2 XL regularly. I love it.
Excellent ergonomics. Great steel. Very smooth pivot
and lock. Locks up very solid. Really the large size is
the only thing I've ever heard anyone complain about.
That's part of what I like about it.
If you like big knives like I do, it's a home-run.
Good luck and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

IF you have actually handled a Manix 2 XL and you like it, get it.

BUT ... I bought an Endura and a PM2 without ever actually handling them and found they were not for me. Then I handled a Delica and Native and fell in luv.

Get what you like and fits your hand and usage. There's no 'wrong' choice if you do.

I like the full liner set up of the Manix over the skelotenized liner set up on the Military.

If you like full liners then you will love the manix xl. If I can also infer from your screen name that you are a fan of well made mechanical items then I might also suggest a Gayle Bradley folder at some point in your future. :)
