Looking to purchase my first Spyderco

I just got a Manix XL today in the mail.

My first impression is that it's a lot of knife for the money. I really don't think it's too big or bulky.

If you're used to a BM Axis lock, the action is similar but just a bit stiff.
The one I got has the black plastic thumb release for the lock. Overall for a knife that cost a tad under $100, it's great.

I have many Benchmade. I love the fact it can "Ambidextrous One Handed Open and Close" function. If you like AXIS lock, Spyderco you would like (At least I find them to be nice) are most likely Manix2 & 2-XL, Sage 3 bolt action, and perhaps Yojimbo2 and PM2 for the compression lock.

I've had mine for a few weeks now, my first Spyderco in many years....I just love it!

Already got a P'Kal, now trying to find a Yojimbo and then a Military, etc etc etc.

The plastic knob on the ball lock, is it a cheap plastic? Or more like a G10 type...ie higher quality?

it's a high quality plastic. The button sits low , so there's little chance it will snag or break if the knife is dropped.

Here's a few pics.

So, just a follow up:
I was at Cabelas on Saturday. They had a Manix there....I checked it out. I didn't feel 100% comfortable with the plastic knob on the lock. I may just go with a PM2. I need to check one of those out now.

Thanks for all the input.

Ron

I kinda agree about the look of the plastic but I don't think there's been any epidemic of problems related to it.

PM2 is another excellent choice. And, while you said you don't like liner locks, the Gayle Bradley is outstanding. It's a quirky knife however, heavy with a big chunk of steel liner locking the blade. Some, including me, find it impossible to access the liner to disengage the lock with the thumb. Still, it's my favorite Spyderco in the 3.5 inch blade range.

I'm not in love with the plastic either but if you like the knife otherwise, don't let that put you off. It is a strong polymer and is probably about as "flimsy" as a Glock. :). Having said that, I will reiterate what I said earlier about preferring the Military, and the Pm2 is also at the top of my favorites list. The Gayle Bradley is built better than any of them but I don't find the blade shape as useful as the pm2 and millie.
