Looking to replace my coldsteel.

I carried around a ColdSteel Ti-Lite around for awhile. Last week, I left it someplace I shouldn't have and it took a walk. So I need to replace it. I carried it everywhere, and often fell asleep with it on my side. Couple of things.

-I live in CA. I heard you are not allowed any type of assisted open knife. Still unsure.

-I would prefer it smaller. I loved the Ti-Lite, but a 4" blade draws a lot of attention sometimes.

-I loved the quillion option on the Ti-Lite. Because of this, I have kind of been leaning towards an emerson cqc7 with wave feature.

-Would like price is be less than $200. I bought my Ti-Lite retail, so it cost me $80. I was bummed about losing that, so anything over $200, and I think I would get really pissed.

-This would be used or at least carried everyday. Handle everything from makeshift screwdriver, box opener, tactical knife.

Thinking about it, I might just get another ColdSteel. But with so many companies out there, I'm looking for suggestions. Have been looking at emerson, SOG, benchmade, and spyderco.

Thanks
-Kevin

bradley alias 1 - 205 from new graham / knife works 3.5" blade, made in the sebenza style (ie a titanium frame lock). I realize its right at the top of your price range but maybe thats worth it. there is also a whole list of benchmades I could give you at 100-150 that would fit the bill.

the alias 1 is good imho because it combines tactical features (very, very fast opening, frame lock, good blade shape for both stabbing and slashing) but in a more normal pocket knife format.

If you dont mind carrying around something that looks the part, microtech socom elite, benchmade hk 14205, benchmade 710d2, and the spydero endura wave all fit the bill.

also, dont use your knife as a screwdirver, ever. carry around a nickel or something.

AO's are legal in CA...

Makeshift screwdriver? maybe a leatherman or swisstool would suit those needs better than a pocket knife.

If you're looking for something to carry around with you at less than 4", why not the Boker Trance or Kershaw Leek? Case makes some nice knives and since they're more traditional, you're not as likely to raise as many eyebrows.

Kersaw Leek has a bit of a fragile tip issue. The Leek tanto in s30v however has a much better tip for your impromtu prying requirements :)

If you like the Ti-Lite, why not try out the new AL version. I think you can get it for about what you paid retail for your zytel version.

Of course, Kershaw makes some very nice knives that are stout and AO. You can get a framelock Shallot for about $50 bucks. 3.5" blade, plenty stout at the tip, smooth all steel construction. I think it even now comes in black if that floats your boat.
You might also look at the Kershaw Storm series if you really want to get a nice knife on the cheap. I think Walmart carries them for about 30-40 bucks. You can even get it in tanto if you want more robust tip.

Get a waved endura and a leatherman wave or possibly a charge. It should come out under 200 dollars and you have the wave you wanted and something with a dedicated screwdriver among other tools.

sticking with the wave...waved endura, you wont regret it

just my 2c on the whole spyderco thing is that they are as ugly as you can make a knife. also, not a big fan of lockbacks when there are frame locks and the axis lock. that being said, spyderco uses great materials and are put together solidly so if you can either get over or like their designs then you get a great knife at a rediculously good price.

if you want to get a sub 100 knife, a benchmade 551 griptilian is made with 154cm and has zytel handels, along with an axis lock, drop point blade and reversible clip drilling on both sides.

Get a Kershaw flipper and you'll never look back. Something like the Lahar, VG-10 steel, G10 scales, solid as a rock, smooth as silk and can be had for around $60.

Why take a chance on an unknown quantity? Get another Ti-Lite. I lost a mountain bike to thieves a few years ago and bought a hybrid to replace it, thinking I'd like it better. Now I've got two bikes, a hybrid and a mountain bike.

It's those kinds of experiences that make old guys wise. Something will always eat at you until you replace it.

Get another Cold Steel. If it has to be something new I would get an Endura or a small fixed blade like a CRKT Ringed Razel.

I'm a Multi-tool guy, so I'm a bit biased, but how about the Leatherman Skeletool CX? It seems to fit all of your list except the wave opening. Nice small 154cm blade, a real set of screwdrivers, and throw in a pair of pliers, all in a rather small pocket-clip package, and for about the same price as your last knife. And if you're used to carrying a 4" knife around, I doubt the size would bother you. Just a thought.:)
Leatherman's CX page.

Another vote for the Spyderco Endura or Delica Wave. Get a $7-10 victorinox with a screwdriver on it on eBay.

Thanks for all of the recommends. I'm looking at all of them. One other question. Where do you guys like to buy knives from online? I've been looking at knife center, because they have what seems to be a large inventory.

Oh, that microtech socom elite is an automatic right? CA has a "nothing cool" law.

Thanks
-Kevin

i suggest a bm griptilian personally, and get a boker trance as a beater knife. knifecenter is awesome and has great customer service. i live in CA as well, AO knives are fine, switchblades arent, no balisongs either.
