Looking to replace my coldsteel.

Thanks for all of the recommends. I'm looking at all of them. One other question. Where do you guys like to buy knives from online? I've been looking at knife center, because they have what seems to be a large inventory.

Oh, that microtech socom elite is an automatic right? CA has a "nothing cool" law.

Thanks
-Kevin

One of my favorite local places is www.cuttingedgeworks.com

You'll want to check and see if they have what you're looking for, but Jon will take care of you.

As for "nothing cool" in CA, when I first got into kives, I would've agreed. But now I realize that we have a LOT of options for cool knives. I love my Hinderer XM-18 and wouldn't trade it for any illegal knife.

Thinking about it, I might just get another ColdSteel.
No good reason I can think of to do that.:D

But with so many companies out there, I'm looking for suggestions. Have been looking at emerson, SOG, benchmade, and spyderco.

Thanks
-Kevin

Emerson and Spyderco are great companies, and both have limited lifetime warranties on their folders. Cold Steel only has a one year warranty on their folders, and none of theirs are made in the USA, unlike Emerson and Spyderco. If I were you, I'd look real hard at Kershaw, too. They've got some incredible stuff at incredible prices!;)

My everyday carrys range from bluejeans and my benchmade vex which is a real surprize on a solid build knive from china. And suit and tie I take the sog twitch 2, well build and slim in the pocket. I don't know if the twich assist kick is Calf. friendly. But that's my two cents. Personal I wish I could carry any knive with out laws getting in the way. Would really like to carry a balisong or maybe a fixed blade from time to time.

Thanks

knifecenter is awesome and has great customer service.

New Graham has an outstanding rep as well.

Bradley Alias and Alias II is available in your price range and highly reguarded.

CA had an amendment added to the law a few years ago to make it specifically clear that AO is legal and not the same as automatic opening.

bm griptilian..i personallt like the 550, but whatever grip you're intrested in I'm sure it'lll outperform your old cold steel

Thanks for all the help. I wound up finding the person who took my Ti-Lite, so I'm getting it back. They grabbed it so a kid wouldn't walk off with it (I work/train in a TaeKwonDo studio). So I am getting it back.

That didn't stop me from ordering some other knives. I ordered a spyderco delica w/ wave. I figured since my Ti-lite is 4" with "wave" that I could do with a smaller wave type blade.

Also for myself I ordered another cold steel. I like the Ti-lite, so I decided to try another Cold knife. Went with recon 1 in plain tanto. I like tanto blades, and figured it was a cheaper alt to the emerson cqc 7. But, I might be getting what I pay for.

Since I didn't have a knife to carry, my friend lent me her POS gerber paraframe mini half serrated. I accidentally dropped this thing at the deli, and the frame broke, so no more lock at all. I wanted to get her a knife that would actually be reliable if she needed it for self defense, and something she could open up quick. Also, had to look half decent, cause she is also the kind of chick who won't carry it if it's ugly. I went with the SOG Twitch 2.

Looking forward to the delivery. :)

Thanks again.

Edit. I also just realized, I remembered my original login name for the boards, so this is flatacid as well. Will be sticking with this nonamekevin.

Absolutely incorrect! Nothing is "clear" where AO is concerned. Penal Code section 653k was ammended, in 1997 and again in 02, to exempt one-hand opening knives, via a thumb-stud or thumb-hole, provided they have a detent that biases the blade back towards closure. The language is still way too vague to interpret it to mean that AOs are exempted from switchblade status. The common sentiment in the State seems to be that they are, for now anyway, "okay," but I did hear of a DA in Kern County who was charging 653k on AOs.

I would ask that you make sure of what you're saying, with regards to legal advice, before you post it.

Here is CA Penal Code section 653k. I've underlined language I feel is vague enough to cause some confusion:

"653k. Every person who possesses in the passenger's or driver's
area of any motor vehicle in any public place or place open to the
public, carries upon his or her person, and every person who sells,
offers for sale, exposes for sale, loans, transfers, or gives to any
other person a switchblade knife having a blade two or more inches in
length is guilty of a misdemeanor.
For the purposes of this section, "switchblade knife" means a
knife having the appearance of a pocketknife and includes a
spring-blade knife, snap-blade knife, gravity knife or any other
similar type knife, the blade or blades of which are two or more
inches in length and which can be released automatically by a flick
of a button, pressure on the handle, flip of the wrist or other
mechanical device
, or is released by the weight of the blade or by
any type of mechanism whatsoever.
"Switchblade knife" does not
include a knife that opens with one hand utilizing thumb pressure
applied solely to the blade of the knife or a thumb stud attached to
the blade, provided that the knife has a detent or other mechanism
that provides resistance that must be overcome in opening the blade,
or that biases the blade back toward its closed position.
For purposes of this section, "passenger's or driver's area" means
that part of a motor vehicle which is designed to carry the driver
and passengers, including any interior compartment or space therein.

I buy on eBay. I'm also a big fan of the Cold Steel Gunsite and recommend you take a look at it. I can no more settle on one knife than I could one pair of socks, though. Knives are so darn good now for the most part that you really have to work hard to go wrong.

The thing about buying a knife is the number of considerations you have to make. Sometimes you pay more for the blade; sometimes you pay for the handle. And sometimes you just pay. Everyone's willing to take money and competition has made it a buyer's market. That's why I said if you already had and like a Ti-Lite, go ahead and just replace it, then look for one you might like better. Tastes change, sometimes, but I carried a Ti-Lite for awhile and I'd probably still be carrying it if it had had an AUS8 blade. Although the 440A was "okay," I just got carried away by the Voyager series. Long and slim, it has very good poking ability but was only a so-so cutter, most likely because of the blade configuration rather than what it was made of. The Gunsite suits me because it has partial serrations, a good tanto point and enough plain edge to cut what I needed to cut. But everyone's different. I actually read a post where someone was complaining that his CR Sebenza was too big for him and he wanted a smaller blade. It shows you just how different people can be with what they want. I like larger blades and the Ti-Lite gives the impression of being longer than it really is. It tucks in the back pocket, cuts most things very well and is strong.

Another knife you might want to consider is a Buck Alaskan, sold by Cabela's. Good, solid, bottom-weighted, premium S30V blade with excellent heat treat and a great leather sheath. And it's only about $70. Hunters and outdoorsmen like it and it keeps an edge extraordinarily well. It also has a beautiful black finish on the blade that reminds me of a really good blue job on a revolver.

Whatever you get, don't forget to tell us what you got and how you like it.

The Buck/Cabela's Alaskan has a beautiful blade and a nice
leather sheath.

Delica 4 wave. Great little knife, doesn't draw attention but has a really good feel in the hand.

Leek. I suggest the combination D2 blade, it is one hell of a buy :)
