Looky what I have coming my way!

RagweedForge (Ragnar) has replacement tomahawk/axe handles in hickory for the ones that he sells. Don't know if they'll fit the boarding axe, but once I get mine and measure the eye, I'm going to write Ragnar and ask.

Yvsa: Khuks, hatchets, boarding axes. You are one chopping fool!

Off topic, hows the back\neck doing?

I couldent help resist. I have one coming my way... time to start looking at my wood stockpile to see what I can turn down. :D

Oh really!
I get thier print catalog and have been drooling over thier Light Infantry Axe.
Definately going to hav e to go take a look at thier webpage and see about thier boarding axe

Marc Adkins

The boarding axe is from Jas. Townsend and Son. Ted, I hope that doesn't violate your intention, since it's not a link.

Andy, I'm drooling, and my resolve is melting.

Well, it was either that, or the little knob on the side. How am I to know how it's done in the South?

lol.. you guys....
I can either use a lathe or just have at it with a belt sander and a big block of wood in a padded vise. You keep the end in the vise square and make that end the chubby end. As you get closer to a finished product you cut strips of sandpaper and do some hand sanding. One of the last things you do is cut the block of wood off.
BTW, this method is really messy, you have to be crazy and have a good shop vac and dust mask along with hearing and eye protection to do it in an apartment like I do. :o
You might be better off ordering something online. I will have to take a look at the eye of the ax as well as the weight in first person before I decide on what I want to do. I have learned that I like longer handles and that makes life difficult if you make your own handles from blocks of wood.
I am really going to have to think about this one.

Dave, you may have just summarized 'crazy'.

If I have some suitable wood, I think I'll see what I can rough-out on the bandsaw, and then take it to the lathe. If I'm lucky, I won't have any wood that will work...

Hey Guys,

It's much easier for me to hit reply and answer an email rather than having to go through the BFC rigmarole to email more than one person at a time so if you would like the link please drop me an email.
But since Aardvark has listed the site there shouldn't be any problem finding it.;)

As to the length of any 'Hawk or Boarding Axe handle I'm sure there may be standards somewhere but too me since either is a personal tool/weapon the length preference for the handle is also a personal preference.
When I was younger I preferred a longer handle than norm but since it's been so long since I've used a 'Hawk I'm not sure now.
I'll have to take down the five 'Hawks hanging on my wall to see how they handle now.;) :p

Just Google, "Osage Orange" and you will find several outfits that sells bowstaves, some have several kinds of wood suitable for self bows and consequently 'Hawk handles. I'm sure if you ask nicely that you will be able to strike a deal.
If not simply go to the nearest woods and find a suitable hardwood sapling.
I've written before how to rapid season wood for a bow and the same would apply for a handle, and a search should turn it up. ;)

Back and neck problems still unresolved totally, as I learn more I'll keep y'all informed.
All I can do is remain hopeful and keep on keepin on.  :D ;)
Right now I'm feeling pretty good but found out quickly *Not* to try to do too much to soon.:o

I've got a family full of ex-sailors (and ex-boarders on occasion) to think about here. I had to order a couple of boarding axe heads. A few other things found their way into my shopping cart, naturally enough.

Damn you, Yvsa. :D

Right now at JT&S, they're probably scratching their heads while they're packing boxes, thinking, "WTF is it with these boarding axes flying off the shelves all of a sudden?"

I'm hardly an expert on the subject but from what I understand, boarding axe handles were generally fairly long, longer than tomahawk handles in any event. Remember that it was a tool first and foremost, with a secondary function as a weapon for those that didn't rate something from the armory, but deserved better than a belaying pin or monkey's fist. The handle would have to be long enough to allow proper leverage for dislodging heavy objects or embedded hot shots, and also to reach into (or over, or around) an actual fire. I would not be surprised at all if some were cut down to improve their characteristics as a weapon but this would reduce their effectiveness as overhaul and demolition tools.

Could at least the name of the place be mentioned? Understood, no active sales links, but if you could say, "Got it from Mineral Mountain," for example, we could google it... just saying.

Mike

That would be fine or you could just look at the image URL. I don't have a problem mentioning where you got it. Just no direct links per Spark.

LMRRAO!!!! Face it guys, you're all just like me and when you saw this thing you just couldn't resist! :p :D
And Dave if I had of had the funds there are several other items that would've found their way into my cart as well!!!! I'm especially fond of their 18th century trade knives, and especially the round handled one!
And methinks you're probably right about the length of the handles being longer than usually found on the average 'Hawk, but then I almost always preferred a longer than usual handle on my 'Hawks anyway.:D

And I wonder if I emailed them and told them what I did if they would send me one of their French 'Hawks at a deep discount since the Boarding Axes have been flying off their shelves since I ordered mine.:p ;)

Found it; got it; hoping they still have any... :p

Mike

Mike I really do hope you got under the wire and get one!
It always makes you wonder what a "small amount" is when they say something like this,

"We have received a small alotment of these really nice boarding axe heads"

But then a small allotment could be a couple of hundred to dealers in such things.;) But then again the ad said they have had them since sometime in 2005 ainnit. ;-)

just as a reference, if i recall correctly, the std. boarding axe handle was approx. 24 in. & had a bulbous end, like on the one shown here:

"Pirate Tech" on the History Channel showed a boarding axe remarkably smiliar to these... which makes sense in the context of the show (Blackbeard=English-style ax).

A good reading link:

I'm leaning towards a longer handle for mine. Spikes are dull-ish by design and can benefit from the acceleration. Could a single langet or side strap go up and over the head to better secure? Hmm.
