Walked into the local supermarket yesterday and right at the front was a table set up by the "Working Committee to Save Walker Lake", the folks that have designated Walker Lake as "Flyway of the Loons. They were selling raffle tickets for a handmade quilts, other items, etc.

Now you may have noticed in the upper left corner of this post it informs you that I am:

From: Walker Lake,
NV - Flyway of the
Loons

I've wanted to point out that the 12" Sirupati is often slighted as being a "baby" while the Randall #1 Fighting Knife is considered a full size REAL WEAPON. I don't have one of the Randalls, which come with either 7" or 8" blades. I do have a Blackjack
1-5 with a nearly 6" ( OK, actually 5 3/4" ) blade. OAL is 10 1/2". Included is a Spyderco Endura for comparison, about 8 1/2" OAL open. Finally is the "baby" Sirupati, with 8 1/2" blade and OAL of 12 3/4". So click on the links below for a couple looks.

While you are looking, notice the loon on the Walker Lake t-shirt used as a backdrop for the pictures.

Like I said, it's all true, folks, it's just that some of it is truer than others.

My Randall #1 has a 6" blade. I handpicked it out of several longer #1's at the Randall shop in Orlando. I kind of like its balance, and it has a beautiful stag handle.

I've heard it said that it's not the size of the tool, but how you use it. Then again, I've also heard the point hotly debated, especially among the coeds in my undergraduate days.

How does that saying go? "It ain't what you don't know that gets you in trouble, but what you know that ain't so."

Randall's website ( www.randallknives.com ) shows #1's in 5", 6", 7", and 8" blades.

I picked up my Blackjack at a Modesto gun show where a guy had a table of Blackjack seconds. There were a few 6"ers and a lot of 7"ers. To me the leather handle was the classic look, and the short blade the best feeling. Before I found HI it used to be *the* knife I grabbed for with my left hand as I grabbed for a pistol with my right. It took a lot of trips with me in my suitcase.

Leroy Thompson gives a trick for preserving leather handles in jungle environments. Melt parrafin wax in a deep narrow container, stick the handle in until the liquified wax penetrates the handle, take out and wipe off.
Ouch! that ungrateful BlackXXXX and I had a disagreement over whether it was sharp enough. It won. Twice. ( And you thought women got jealous? )
