Loose pivot screw on Commander

I just recently got my first Commander. Wow, what a neat knife. The wave feature is truly awesome. This is truly the fastest drawing folder I have ever seen. It caused me to retire my beloved Microtech DA SOCOM. But I already have a problem with mine, and just wanted to know if somebody could help with my problem. After about one day of practicing drawing the knife, I noticed that the pivot screw had loosened. I need to know how to remedy this problem, and if anybody could help me, the information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, David

Hi David!
I too had the same problem, and the blade was moving over and touching the liner. I kept adjusting the screw, but did same thing.
How I solved the problem, was put a drop of Loctite 290 on the pivot screw, and tightened the screw until the blade was back in the center.
Thats been 3 months ago, and has not moved since, nor has a blade moved over. The knife has been opened, and flicked over 4000 times, and still the same.
Awesome knife, and one of the sharpest ATS-34 blades I've owned.
If you at any time need to remove, or turn the screws, just use a hairdryer, and point it on the pivot screw for a couple of minutes, and loosen with screwdriver.
Hope this helps.

I don't recommend this all the time but if you get your knife to a very nice sweet spot you may want to put a drop of lock tight on the pivot screw. It will make it very difficult to ever adjust it again so be very careful when you do it.

Thanks Larry and Mike for that fast response. But where do I get Loctite 290?? Thanks, David Walker

David!
Got it at auto parts store like Pep Boys, Kragen, etc. I've used it many time on many of my knives to hold the blade, and smoothness to that "sweet spot" as Mike says. I've never had any problem getting the screws loose without stripping or messing up the head of the screws by using the hairdryer trick.
Sorry if I doubled on you Mike. I just know how frustrating it is when the screw won't stay still, and don't want to scratch up the blade on the liner.
Anyway, hope this helps where to get the Loctite. Make sure you get "290", as there are different grades, and some are a real bummer to break the screws loose, and you could mess up the head of the screws, or even snap them.

I use LocTite "Tite'N For Bolts" - the blue stuff. This makes a rubbery substance that has enough grip to hold the screw in place but it can still be removed easily. It can last for several removals and allow the screw to be adjusted while keeping it tight enough not to loosen in use.

When using any of these products, use sparingly and don't get any outside of the pivot post. If any gets in the blade pivot area against the blade, the action of the knife will be markedly worsened.

It is interesting that you have the problems with the pivot screw. I have the same problems with my CQC6 that is hand made, also the clip loosens. And while it can be remedied with lock tite it is the only folder I have with this problem and I think that we all paid too much to have that problem when the other makers seem to do it ok. What is your take on that?

I had a new bead blast Commander that had the same problem. Except no matter how I tightened the pivot screw, the blade still rubbed. It wasn't like this when I first got it. It just slowly appeared after undergoing moderate use. I was going to send it back, but a friend decided he didn't care if it rubbed and bought it.

I agree that knives in this price range shouldn't have that kind of a problem. The Crawfords I have don't exhibit this problem and I can make the pivot screw extremely loose. It might be QC issue as apposed to a design flaw.

I was considering a Emerson commander next month. But after seeing these comments, i may reconsider. a $200.00 knife should not have this problem. Just my opinion.

As an alternative to Loc-Tite, carefully trim a piece of teflon tape and wrap it around the threads. You'll have to experiment with the thickness (# of wraps) depending on the existing tolerance of the screw. It cured the loose screw on my CQC7.
