Losing a Knife Clipped to the Pocket

Not much into carrying things in my pockets. The only time I carry a knife in my pocket is at work, which requires "munchkin" knives.

I generally carry my knives IWB - never lost something that has been located inside the waistband of my pants and for knives that have an approximately 4-inch blade (my preferred blade length) I find such carry the most comfortable.

I don't much like pocket clips, but there are certain pairs of pants or shorts that have the front pockets sewn into the outseam. Sit down and stuff just slides out. The few knives I own that still retain their clips get used with these pants. Running shorts without pockets get the old IWB treatment. Still, I've lost more knives with clips than I care to think about. Lost only one that didn't have a clip.

I don't know what all this "knives in pockets get in the way" stuff is all about. Pockets are for knives. It's the other stuff that gets in the way of the knife. Gotta get the priorities straight.

Yesterday I thought my Spyderco Native S30V was gone forever. Fortunately a kind soul found it in the parking lot and turned it in. I eat lunch with a lady from HR who recognized it was probably mine. I've had some other near misses with this Native. Has anyone devised a way to have a clip knife accessible but more secure?

Your post strikes a painful note for me. Yesterday I somehow lost my Gen 1 Manix, which sucks. I love this knife, and I've carried it for several years now, with never a problem. If I have to replace it, it's going to cost a LOT more than I paid for it.... :(

Sure hope my prayers are answered and I get mine back, as you did.

Never had a knife lost from being clipped in the pocket before...at least not yet anyway.

Hope you find your Manix. That sure does blow.

Well, my prayer was answered! I was pretty sure I'd lost it yesterday while helping set up the props for our churches upcoming nativity pageant, so today I trekked back out there with my little girl in tow. Wonder of wonders, I found it! It was safe and sound, lying on the floor of one of the shelters I'd helped set up. What an amazing feeling to actually have it back in my hands!

I'd checked out the forums, and I could get another one for around $150 or so, but I wouldn't be any farther ahead in my knife collection if I did. Now, I can take that $150 and start looking for a lovely sage green Manix, or maybe a CF Stretch II.....

Glad you found your Manix! I'm still looking for my first large Manix.

The plastic clip on the early Enduras didn't grip well enough and I was always hunting under car seats for it. Haven't had any problems with the big metal clip on the later versions.

Never saw any advantage to clipped carry which outweighed the disadvantages. Between the risk of losing the knife or damaging it when it hits the ground, the risk of bending and eventually breaking the clip, the risk of damaging furniture and even more expensive things, and the questionably legality of carrying a knife that way in some places, opting for loose pocket carry would have been an easy decision for me even without fifty years of experience carrying knives that way.

Weird. As I just said, I had my Stretch slip out of my pocket while carrying loose, but never has a knife come off my waistband clipped under my belt. I can't even imagine any circumstance in which it would.

I had that problem with 2 different Spyderco models many years ago. I found 2 remedies that have helped immensely. First of all I take the clip off of the knife and put it in a vise. Then I bend it inward by about 30 degrees. That way it fits in the pocket very tightly. My big Dyad for instance is a little bit of a hassle to remove but it stays put very well.

Another remedy I discovered has worked better than most. I am a big fan of Carhartt clothes. I wear their jeans almost daily and on hard work projects I wear their bib overalls. Both the jeans and the overalls have a slender side pocket along the leg which you can carry certain tools in. Many times I clip my blade to that side pocket along the leg and I've never had a Spyder fall out or be pulled out of that leg pocket in either the jeans or the overalls.

Carhartt clothes are truly the workingman's friend in many aspects. Good thread because this is a concern that I myself think about a lot. I"ve been very fortunate not to have lost a valued Spyder but there were 2 occasions where a Spyder was pulled out by a seatbelt but luckily I spotted them immediately.

I have never lost a clip-carried knife. Usually the first thing I do when I get a new knife is remove the clip, bend it for a firmer grasp, re-install with blue loctite. Yes, the seams of my pockets tend to get a bit worn, but that is preferable to losing a $200.00 dollar knife.
