Lost a Couple of Old Friends Today

How can you write "RIP Jerry" and "Hippies. :D" in the same post?

I admit that I don't quite understand the Dead Head culture, but aren't hippies welcome there? I may need to do some quick and dirty, Wikipedia-based, sociological research.

The Birks are about as close as I ever came to hippie-dom. And in their defense, those are paint specks, not mildew, you insensitive bastids! :D

So you expect us to believe that you didn't tote around a possibles bag made of woven hemp or stank of petchuli(SP) oil and incense cones? :D

Jerry was heavy into bluegrass too. I am way too young to be part of the hippie culture thing, but there was a resurgence of it mostly among the gals I went to school with. They were all about peace love and understanding. I would show them the pics of tank macerated, sun bleached bones from my SOF magazines and watch them run away in disgust. No hippie love for me my man. :)

That's ... very disturbing. :(

But at least you gave them a proper burial. :)

And now, they will never be a threat to the Greater Dwarf Cloud Rat. :D

Come to think of it, they no doubt stink to high Heaven. Might be useful for attracting the rare California Wolverine. So we can preserve them, don't ya know. :D:D

Every time you read this post, it takes on new layers of meaning.

The bluegrass is about my only connection to Jerry, other than a Grateful Dead Greatest Hits CD that I have somewhere in the collection. (Thanks so much, BMG! :D). The Old and In the Way (bluegrass group) stuff is okay, and I own their first album/CD. I saw Peter Rowan and Vassar Clements, two of the members, play together at the Ryman once. That was a psychodelic evening for many of the audience members.

What's petchuli oil? Will that work on micarta slabs?

It might, why don't you try it. It would surely give the rest of us Hogs a heads up as to your approach to the trough. :D

May they rest in peace, and I'm glad they served you so well. I was sorry to see the footbeds take such an INFI beating!! :D

Barb, I often threatened to send in the beds for a re-soling--mainly just to get a rise out of my wife and watch her roll her eyes. :D

I wouldn't be so quick to knock it. According to Wikipedia:

One study suggests Patchouli oil may serve as an outdoor insect repellent.[3] In several Asian countries, such as Japan and Malaysia, Patchouli is also used as an antidote to poisonous snakebite.

The plant and oil have a number of claimed health benefits in herbal folk-lore, and its scent is used with the aim of inducing relaxation. Chinese medicine uses the herb to treat headaches, colds, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain.

I bet if I post this in W&S, some guys might start carrying it in their Bug Out Bags. :D

We had a bus boy that worked for us that believed it had curative powers if ingested. I heard he managed to have some sort of systemic reaction to that treatment. I think it ended with a stomach pump. He was none too smart.

Wow! No amount of baking soda was gonna take the funk out of those things. Lil leather petri dishes, I tell ya!

You are a Pigawan, no more - strong you are.

Not as strong as the smell of those filthy Birks though!!
