Sorry to bother you guys with this news but I just need to get this of my chest. Yesterday I had to put down my German Shepard named Duke. He had cancer and my wife and I decided it was enough. We didn't want to let him suffer unnecessary. I'm so sad and feel so bad for my little girl. She is almost two years old and has no clue about death.
He died with his head in my lap and she and my wife said their goodbyes to him. Very sad. He was my friend for over 8 years. I picked him up from the animal rescue when he was 2 and we had some great times together. We will miss him so much.

Sorry to hear the news...I am with you Brother ,I had my Shephard mix put down earlier this year .... had her since 1993(purchased her from the SPCA and she was 18months old) . like losing a family member..only dog my son has grown up with from baby to pre-teen (being he is 12 about to be 13) Boy that was one sad day.... I still get sad talking about her...one of the best dogs I ever owned.

I know your pain better than you do---

I have had to bury 3 German Shepherds---One from a Car accident, one from Bloat and one from Cervical cancer.

The only advice I can give you is two fold

#1:Read this---OVER AND OVER

http://www.petloss.com/poems/maingrp/rainbowb.htm

#2:and get another GSD when you are ready

Not to replace Duke--but to transfer the love you had for him into a puppy that needs an experienced owner.

I am very sorry for your loss...and I know what you're feeling...

Sincerely

Dr.Bill

My condolences man. It's hard. The memories never go, and he will never be replaced or forgotten.

sorry to hear about it!!!
We went through that once as well with our boxer...

That was a magnificent dog... really nice...

what a bummer....keep your head up man. Those pics are great BTW. Looks like you had a good friend.

Man, I'm so sorry for you. What a beautiful dog Duke was, and clearly he and your little one were tight. Don't feel bad about bringing this here. Many of us have been where you're at. More than a year ago I lost my Tasha, who had been family for nearly 14 years. I still am touched by the outpouring of sympathy and encouragement my friends here offered.

You did the manly thing to do, and saved Duke from months of anguish. Now it is all right to feel the pain you are suffering, with no guilt or embarassment. Your life was richer for having Duke. Even though the loss seems huge, remember that his passing did not erase all the years and memories you had together.

I'm so sorry for your loss,I have lost a few and it dosen't get any easier. You have to enjoy them while you have them with you, dogs just don't live long enough to suit us.Please get that sweet girl another soon as you can---Best Regards Butch

A prayer and some smoke are headed your way. I lost my best buddy about 18 months ago. It was rough for a while. These days thinking about him usually makes me grin. God bless. - DT

I'm sorry for your loss. I've had to put down two of my bestest buddies in the whole world as well. It's never an easy thing to do. Smoke and prayers from MI.

I am sorry to hear the loss. Losing a dog is one of the hardest things to do. I remember when my lab got hit by a car, it was a very sad day.

I'm sorry for your loss. I have been through this difficult decision but when we did we knew we made the right, albeit difficult, decision. It is right to mourn for your loved one. He was part of the family. May peace be with you and your family.

Ouch
Sorry for your loss.
I couldnt take it to be with my dog
when I had to put mine down.
man,it sucks
I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

Very sorry to hear about your loss, it truly brings tears to my eyes reading your story.

I lost my father but the pain when I lost a pet was so much greater.

It is very sad and I'm sure the great memories will last a life time.

My condolences; a family dog is a family member and it's always an emotional and painful event to lose them. We recently had our pooch of 7 years get killed by a car a few months ago and it was the hardest thing for my son to deal with...that was his best buddy. We now have a new pooch that has really adapted well to the family. The loss is difficult, but a part of life...still doesn't make it easy. I'll make a toast to Duke tonight...my son asked if dogs go to heaven when Leo was killed by a car. Well, if you believe is such a place, I honestly have to believe that Leo received a little bit of each of our souls and will be waiting for us some day...

Sorry for your loss.

Last Christmas I had to put my 15 year old female Pit Bull down with cancer. She lived a good long life though.
