lost a little respect for Benchmade, SAKs are good knives

I'm a big fan of Spyderco, Benchmade, Victorinox, Opinel, and plenty of others. However, my respect for Benchmade has dropped a little after reading the text of one of their adds, ironically read on their forum site:

"Ditch the $20 cheapy and that Swiss thing with the corkscrew and stop using your housekey to open boxes. A Benchmade is engineered to be sharper, more durable, and more acessible than anything the world has seen. Even if you only use it for box opening. But when the situation arises that you really need a knife, what you'll need is a Benchmade"

I don't see a problem. The add doesn't claim that SAK's are not good knives, just that Benchmades are better.

In general, I tend to agree.

I suppose, but i think naming and shaming is a good way to encourage competition. Better than dancing around an issue.

This is a good idea. I'm going to throw away all my cheap knives and my SAK's and only buy Benchmades now.

It is tempting to think that putting down others is an easy way to making yourself look good. It does not work for me, others may disagree.

It seems out of character for Benchmade.

If you read a few of Benchmade's product descriptions, you'll wonder if they got some kid a new dictionary and told him to puff up everything he wrote, never mind if he used the almost-right word.

It's on their website, so they figure they're preaching to the choir. But I don't think negative advertising sets a good example.

Hey, now advertizing knives is getting like campaining for office. Put down the other guys to make your product look more superior. I tend to agree that a Benchmade is better than most, but they should remember there is always someone better.

Who cares as long as they make good knives?
You'll see. Some people on this forum have stopped buying from a manufacturer for less. It doesn't bother me though. I don't buy because of hype.

Swiss army knives are still so/so examples of knives. I have something like 20 of them, even some of the reasonably desireable ones like the Cybertool, and they're just not anything special. If I do carry a SAK, it is always with another knife. I have also destroyed the blades of many a SAK as a child.

My edc (in pants, not EDC bag) is usually a Spyderco of some kind and a SAK. Both can do something the other cannot...

Neither is "better." Just different. Comparing apples and oranges. Sorta like comparing a Griptilian to a Battle Mistress, no?

hey.. pepsi bashes coke, and despite this I somehow still buy the one I think tastes better. Benchmade rules!
:D

What would really be funny is if Victoronox made a folder with torx drivers and a really nice blade and sold it as the Benchmadeinator. LOL Their slogan can be "Take apart that old benchmade and cut it to pieces." Oh man I have too much time on my hands. :p

True... and if pepsi bashes budweiser, I'll still buy a soda when I want one and a beer when I want a brew. SAK & Benchmade? More like Benchmade and Spyderco as a real comparison.

Still, the ad was meant in jest IMHO... at least I see it as funny. It wouldn't dissuade me from buying a Benchmade. However, it also wouldn't convince me to pick up a BM Skirmish, when I would rather use my Vic Deluxe Tinker as I head up into the attic to monkey with wiring.

The Swiss Army knife has a great and long history, said comments are IMHO wrong and I honestly don't know what I think about Benchmade now. Then again maybe it's not Benchmade as a whole, but just a bad choice of words 'one' person made. I don't know, I'd like to see where this all goes.

I think Bechmade is picking a fight in another weight division.... which is a waste of resources. C'mon, who thinks of SAK when looking at a Benchmade and, conversly, who thinks of benchmade when shopping for SAK's? Wasted Ad campaign.

(P.S. Can your benchmade dissasemble A SAK to pieces? ;) joke)
