Lost a peanut... Carry advice?

The first requirement when I buy pants or shorts is: How deep are the pockets. If the pockets are shallow, I don't get em. With keys, money clip, change, two knives (one clipped), phone and other various things I need deep pockets or something will work it's way out. Because of that I can say that I haven't lost a knife out of my pocket.

I'm with you on deep pockets. I haven't used the bandana trick yet, but I've stopped wearing pants or shorts with shallow pockets because it's so easy for stuff to fall out. We wear shorts most of the time here in Tucson, and the best ones I've found are Carhartt work shorts.

The nice thing about dress slacks and suit trousers is that they tend to have deep pockets, often with a little mini-pocket sewn in to the bottom of the right front pocket. Not sure what that little guy is called but it's great for keeping larger knives vertical in your dress pants. Also helps to hide "the bulge" that my GEC #73 would otherwise make. Is that little pocket a hold-over from the old days? Anybody know?

hmm, maybe my the pockets on my shorts are a little shallow. I'd try the bandana trick, but then where do you keep your keys and phone? Right now phone and pen is in the LFP, keys and knife in RFP, bandana folded in RBP, and wallet in LBP. I'm going to try and drop my backup :D in the RBP under my bandana, we'll see if that works. Keep the suggestions coming, though

A leather pocket slip can help...

Also available with a pocket clip, but I prefer clipless...

as others have said, dont buy pants with skimpy, shallow pockets. i wear both jeans and 'docker' type pants. in the docker type a knife often goes in the back pocket. the 'geometry' of the back pockets makes a knife less likely to slip out as long as you are not upside-down. also many times the back pocket can be buttoned shut.
also some materials like smooth delrin or other smooth plastic seem to slip out more easily than textured material. larger diameter knives such as an opinel seem to slide around less than small knives like a tiny toothpick.
the loosely wadded bandana seems like a good idea for securing a knife and practical in its own right; lots of uses for some sort of rag in your pocket.

I strongly recommending looking into a pocket slip sheath. Not only do they make it much harder to lose your knife, but they can make it much more comfortable in pocket. No more walking around with your knife falling horizontal in the pocket. With a nice slip sheath they carry very un noticeably.

I'd also like to sing the praises of Bladeforums own "Al Dodge" (username Pocketknifesheaths)! He made me a few very nice, custom order pocket slips for a very reasonable price. Great guy to deal with.

I lost many "cheapo deluxe" (as my dad called them) knives as a kid. All cheap little traditionals. But op's picture reminded me of my worst knife loss: I left a Spyderco Caly 3.5, that had come back from Golden for sharpening literally days earlier, on a seat in the Warren Pennsylvania Applebee's after orienteering at Kinzua. I'm still extremely bummed, my first >100 knife.

I bought an Old Timer 108OT Junior Stockman about 30 years ago when I began selling gypsum wallboard (a sheepfoot blade is perfect for scoring wallboard), and a few years later when I thought I had lost the 108OT I bought an Uncle Henry 807UH; I alternately carried them both until permanently lost. I have no idea where or when I lost the UH, but I lost the OT on a job-site in Fayetteville NC in 2005. I went back to the job-site and looked everywhere, but it was gone - I still miss that little knife. When my kids were small and I had misplaced one of my knives in the house, I would pay a $1 bounty to whoever found it - my kids would tear the house apart and find my knife (usually down in a chair). Haven't lost one since, but I am more aware of the knife in my pocket now - it rides in my left front pocket with my cell phone on top. OH
