Lost Bucky?

Two weeks ago tomorrow (on Dec 15th), I forwarded the Rubber Bucky by way of USPS priority mail, but with no tracking or insurance, to Mainewoodsman. As of yesterday, Woody informed me that he still had not received it. I was hoping that it might have simply been delayed due to the holiday shipping and/or the bad weather in the western US the past few weeks; however, I am now beginning to think that perhaps it may have been "misappropriated" by someone within the mail system. I have already contacted Dave, and he told me not to worry, but I am still PO'ed about this. So two questions: (1) Has anyone else ever "lost", either sending or receiving, knives in the mail? (I know there are some threads/posts in other subforums in this regard), and (2) Are packages "inspected" is some manner for their contents, perhaps similar to the way that luggage is inspected in the airports (don't think that is an x-ray per se), when they enter the system so that postal employees become aware of what is inside, hence rendering particular items susceptible to a less than scrupulous employee?

Once for me. I bought a Uncle Henry 165 in mint condition for about $80. I didn't insure with the seller and the idiot mailed it in a 8x11 envelope with that paper pulp style liner. As a sheath knife I'm sure it was very easy for a PO employee to note what it was. The envelope arrived with a damaged in transit sticker...no knife. I suppose the sorting machines could have ripped the hole...never know.

Maybe it will show. I always ship in boxes and insure if its something of value or something I want the PO to be careful with. The idea that an insured item is handled with extra care may be unfounded but that's what I do.

as i told tin , i have lost a total of 4 knives in the mail..
two in one week and then two years later 2 more in one week
3 of the knives were sent WITH tracking and showed as delivered..
there are 4 streets with 334 as the number ..
yes it was delivered but not here ..
i put a hold on ALL packages to have a notice to pick up..
well gee... have gotten 4 so far at the house!!
government workers ... yea i say that and i were one once.
i am not worried on the knife if it dont show you both should ask at the post office some time near the end of the week .. if nothing then dont worry!
i will buld another and send it around ..

I'm bummed about the missing buck... I really wanted to try out Dave's latest masterpiece, and I love 110FG.

I've bought and sold knives, and have almost always used USPS with delivery confirmation. Never lost one yet, there is always a first time... I've not heard that USPS uses x-ray, I don't think they could afford to x-ray every article sent.

I'll check at the PO desk, maybe someone forgot to put a slip in my box. The PO has been swamped for the Holiday season.

They have to x-ray stuff that goes on a plane, aviation law. So, they may just x-ray all of it rather than sorting out what has to fly.

Hope the knife shows.

I had one lost a few years back from an ebay deal, since I was deployed at the time I didn't know it till months later and really couldn't do anything about it. Contacted the seller (a custom knife maker) but he blew me off. Can't really blame him, but I will not deal with him again.

That is REALLY a bummer :(

Little Rubber Bucky he's the one...he made knife brotherhood so much fun.
Rubber Bucky, we're all lost along with you.

I did send it priority mail which is supposed to be two-day service to most of the US, so that undoubtedly means it went by air, and, according to Ohen Cepel, it was then x-rayed so it contents were made know. The address was a PO box, so it was not taken from Woody's door step. I have learned my lesson here, albeit the hard way, and I will never ever send another knife without tracking and insurance. So Dave, I guess you had better make another to continue the pass around, and I'll certainly pay the replacement cost.

Dave,

If you like, I'll put the Horse Bucky into the rotation. It a 1995 so not as neat as the old two liner. I know your busy these days so its your call.

Those are pretty magnanimous gestures on both of your parts.:thumbup:

Clint, since Dave started this with a 112 "pass around", I'm emailing you Mainewoodsman's address should you desire to follow through, but remember that the original was supposed to be the prize for this year's Buck slogan contest as well I keep hoping that "Bucky" will actually show up like one of those lost dogs we all hear about that finds its way back home after being lost a long time!!

The following is a partial quote from Esav Benyamin (from another thread) who most of us know as one of the mods here and who apparently also works for USPS is a managerial position. Apparently, "tracking" is really only delivery confirmation, so if one is after some additional piece of mind, insuring and registering is recommended.

X-rays. I have no idea. I doubt USPS does it for their own purposes, perhaps some agency might just to check for contraband or hazards.

Tracking. Registered mail is ensured automatically and tracked to each employee who handles the pouch or the piece. They have to sign for it. Find out what Reg costs these days; it may be worth the peace of mind. Express Mail is also tracked and automatically insured and I found it moves so fast it bypasses a lot of opportunities for theft. Ordinary mail including Priority only gets tracked if you buy a special service that includes it, and the tracking is only confirmation of delivery or signing, not step by step where-is-it like Reg.

Sorry to hear the mail troubles, as a side note.....I just sent a knife to one of our Buck brothers in Canada, shipped in cardboard, wrapped with THREE layers of clear tape, addressed well, Priority Mail, Insured. Will let you know the outcome.
In my small town I have made it a point to meet the postmaster, the lady at the front desk and the guy that walks up my sidewalk. I use to try on Saturdays, if home, to meet him at the street to save him the walk up and to converse. He knows I Ebay but not whats inside the packages. I know lots of you are in large towns but if your not, become the guy that lives over on whatsamacallit street who gets ebay stuff, not just a street number. PS This was suggested by my Uncle who was a postman and also the lady who delievered mail to our office for 20years. She even came to my retirement party....doesn't do anygood anywhere but home, but some of Dave's trouble was local.....

RB 112 To the Rescue!!!!! I just got off the phone with Dave asking him if he minded having the 112 proto he made for me stand in place of the missing 110 RB for this years test Buck..He was totaly cool with that so it will go out in wensday's mail !! I am NOT a good sharpener so it will need a touchup...Mainewoodsman look for it in 5 to 6 days I'll post the tracking number here so we can all follow it's journey...Just be sure you take it fishing..I was REALLY impressed with the way RB 110 worked covered in Grouper guts down at the Sunshine Skyway bridge in Tampa..I'll put a sheath in the box too so it has a place to rest...

Good point Pack Rat... some low life figures they got lucky.

Jeff -- I'm sorry it did not make it back to the lonestar state... heck, it did not even make it here.

I stopped by the PO today, they checked for me and no package to be found.
