Not sure if this is the right forum for this question but I wanted to see how other people have handled Lost or Stolen Postal Money orders.

I mailed, via regular mail, a USPS MO as payment for a knife auction that I won. It has been 12 days and the seller hasn't received it yet. I live about a four hour drive from the guy so it really only should have taken a couple days.

I inquired at the PO and they do not replace the MO until 60days after the purchase date. They can start a trace on the letter itself after 30days (apparently they send something to the address, to the other PO, to some other cities, and to the Postal Inspectors).

So, I am not sure exactly what to do in the meantime, I don't want the seller to be getting too anxious. I have copied the MO receipt and intend to send it to the guy to show that I really did get the MO on the date I said.

Do you think it is reasonable to wait for the PO machine to do its thing?
I mean I guess that is part of the reason we use PO money orders, partly due to their guaranteed cash and partly because of the safety of replacement.

Anybody else have to deal with Lost or Stolen MO?

TIA, Phil

I just had to file for a lost MO. Took 60 days and then I got a check from the PO in the mail. In the meantime, I contacted the other party and we agreed to wait a certain length of time to see if it decided to show. After a reasonable time, I just sent more money and waited for the trace to run it's course.

This was, BTW, a MO sent Priority Mail w/delivery confirmation. PO says that Priority Mail is no guarantee of faster delivery, they just TRY and make it within 2-3 days.

don't give up hope yet.

but I had to do the same thing, work it out with the seller, even resend if need to.
