First of all - I can see that some of the Spyderco people, take part it this forum, so let me start by adressing this to you:

"Thank you so very very much. For taking the time and effort to make a knife that complies with our strict danish laws.
For you to do that, truly shows that Spyderco makes knives to serve the people, and not just to make money!"

I couldn't find any particular reviews about the "DK Pen Knife", so I thought I'd share my experience.

As mentioned in the topic I, until recently, had a Delica (plain with FRN clip), which served me very good, until I lost it in the woods. I believe the lanyard god stuck on something and pulled it out of my pocket - lesson learned - so watch out for that.

My only real problem with the Delica is that it's illegal here in Denmark, so I couldn't use in on a daily basis. This is a shame, since it's truly a very good and lightweight knife.
I began searching for a worthy replacement, and learned about the DK Pen Knife. This was like a call from heaven, and today I tracked one down, and bought immediately!

To put it short: This is one hell of a knife

Specs:

Handle: G-10, 3.94 inches
Blade steel: CPMS30V, 2.72 inches (legal limit = 2.76)

Obviously, the materials used are very good, and the built quality is flawless (compared to what I know).
It came razor sharp, and the action is very smooth, and sturdy. It has absolutely no blade play.
The first thing that comes to mind, is that this knife is built, just one the right side of the legal limit. It's legal, no doubt about it, but only just.
Sure, it doesn't lock 100% (slip joint). But it feels and performs better than my Delica did. And yes, it does take quite some effort to close it (best of sweeping it towards the thigh).
Further more, the Spyderhole, has been filled/rounded, which means that the average person must use both hands to open it. Never the less, I can easily open it one handed.
...but then again - I can open my Leatherman Squirt knife blade, one handed :jerkit:
It has a nice bronze-like pocket clip, which makes the knife sit very low, when clipped in the pocket, making it quite invisible...buuuuuut then again who cares - I don't have to hide it anymore :)
The combination of the tight clip, and the ruff/gribby G-10 surface, makes the knife sit comfortable and locked it position.
The only thing I could maybe wish for, is a hole for a lanyard. Maybe I'll make one some day - but for now I like it just the way it is :)

All in all, I will say that the daily performance of this knife easily stands up to the performance of the Delica, despite the missing lock and narrowed Spyderhole.
The major important differences of course: Better grip, ergonomics, quality, AND IT'S LEGAL - can't mention that enough! :)

...I'm going to carry this baby forever.

A final question - does anybody know how many of these where made?!? Does it qualify as a "collectors item"? And last, what's the small logo below the Spyderhole on the second picture?

Thanks for reading my praise to Spyderco, I hope I've made myself understandable, despite my lacking english.

Regards
Claus - Danish Spyderco Fan

[UPDATE]
Here's how I added a hole for a lanyard:

I understand the lock being part of the illegality of other knives, but what aspect of the law is reflected in the filling of the Spyderhole?

Very nice knife Claus. You hit the nail right on the head when you said, "Thank you so very very much. For taking the time and effort to make a knife that complies with our strict danish laws.
For you to do that, truly shows that Spyderco makes knives to serve the people, and not just to make money!"

"One hand opening" knives are illegal to own in Denmark. This of course includes balisongs, assist-opening knives, etc.etc.

I mostly carry my UK penknife which is almost identical to the DK. These are wonderful knives!

Congrats on the DK penknife, Spyderco is the greatest!

p.s.- I really like your User Name:)

I have never seen one in person but the UK Pen Knife looks like a winner. If I ever have to move to the UK with my wife, I will probably have to buy one.

What a great knife Mr Turnip! :)

I have a UKPK for very similar reasons to you, and it rules!!

The DKPK looks nice as well, I am glad you can still open it one handed ;)

You write a WHOLE lot better than many of my friends. I've known many non-native English speakers who take the time to learn grammar and syntax and, soon, speak better than 80% of the crowd over here.

Glad to hear you are satisfied with your new purchase! There is nothing like owning a quality knife and getting to use it legally. :D

Mr.Turnip, I can't agree more with your review and analysis. Congrats and Enjoy your knife :)

Mr. Turnip: I am sorry that you lost your Delica!! But, you replaced it with a fantastic knife!! At least I think so. I bought myself a UKPK. Congrats!! I am very happy that you got a knife that you LOVE so much AND can legally carry. Spyderco rules!! Claus, I understaood you just fine!! No worries!!

No one answered your question (that I saw anyway) the little symbol on the side of your blade in the second picture is Sal's signature. (Sal the owner of Spyderco and the designer of this knife). It is the weekend, so who knows he might just chime in here. He is a moderator here and usually enters the forums on the weekends....assuming he isn't busy with other stuff.

I hope you are able to work to get those stupid laws changed.

What public safety need is served by preventing people from being able to open their knives with one hand?

- Does such a law make it impossible for someone to obtain and carry such a knife? If not, the law is pointless and will not save anyone injury or death.

- Even if someone were utterly unable to get a one-hand-opening knife, if he needed to have his knife open and usable very quickly for the purpose of a criminal attack he plans to perpetrate, he could just carry a two-hand-opening knife already open!

And I'll bet that someone over there (whatever legislators voted for such an idiotic law) patted themselves on the back for "making the streets safe"...

Hi Mr. Turnip,

Thanx for the kind words, and "you are welcome".

The initial run was only 300 pcs. Hardly a money maker ;)

If demand grows, we'll make more. The laws in Denmark have been challenging, but we do try to serve our customers everywhere.

My point exactly - and you are doing one hell of a good job :D

A curious question - did you actually get some kind of "legal certificate" for the knife, from the danish police/justice department? Or is it enough that Spyderco, as a manufacture, "claims" that the knife complies with the danish law?

We mostly discussed the laws with Danes. This has been an ongoing problem with our knives in Denmark for many years. the laws kept changing. We kept trying to work with them.

When they finally decided on the non-one-hand opening and 8 cm length, we designed the DK to meet that law.

Only 300:eek: I guess I'd better order one, then:D Actually, perhaps two - I was hoping to use it a fair amount. One of the CDN vendors has it available instead of the UKPK over here. I've been eyeing on of those or a UKPK for while now but didn't want to risk bringing one across the line. Dang Delica 4's keep getting in the way - I have 4 now:D

I just looked on Heinie Haynes, to see if they had an DKPK, but they do not. Sorry!! That is the only place I have seen them!

I bought mine from the store, linked below. It's close to where I live, and the owner is very friendly and helpful. He told me that he had shipped more out of Denmark, than he had sold in the store :)

For some reason, far from all his items are translated, and shown on the english pages - so I've added the link to the DKPK, below. This is of course in danish.

The price is about 122$ - which seems a lot, but actually is quite cheap - compared to the competition, here in Denmark;)
