Lost my knife to the trash compacter

Hello everyone,

Long story short, i was at work today and my knife got put in with the garbage and proceeded to be compacted.
So i need a new one.
My knife was a Kershaw Skyline, it worked great but my only complaint was that the clip was too tight.
I don't want a knife that is any larger than the skyline and it can't be over $50 as I am a cheap, poor student.
I've been looking at the SOG twitch 2 and the Kershaw OD-1.
The primary use is just cutting carboard and tape so nothing to difficult.

Just curious on what your guy's thoughts are on these knives and any others that you think would work for me.

Well....I'd go with a serrated edge, possibly from Spyderco. Will hold an edge longer, and will tear through that cardboard.

How about a Benchmade Aphid? Its a great little knife for the price. They are usually in the $60-65 range, but you can find one in the 50's if you look around. The other suggestions are great, as well.

Checkout he thread on adhesive sticking on blade on the Maintenance subforum.

For budget student, look at Sanrenmu, Enlan/Bee. There're plenty of medium sized models to choose from. Perhaps Sanrenmu 763 is light enough for your purpose.

If size is not a limit, Enlan EL01 with flat ground blade might work well, or new Navy k631 FFG.

I'd stay away from SOG. Kershaw has a ton of awesome knives in your price range. Check out the Leek, Oso Sweet, Black out and blur. Also the Cold Steel Mini AK-47 or Mini Lawman are spectacular knives for the price, which is $5 or so more than you want to spend.

+1
GP Knives has a GREAT price on aphids.

Why don't you just get another one and bend the clip out? Or you can get one of G&G Hawk's ZT clips since the Skyline uses the same clip. It has a part on the end you can push on to release the clip.

buck vantage avid large (about $35). If you could swing about $51-$52 plus shipping, get the buck vantage pro.

Best suggestion i've heard all day!

When someone needs an inexpensive edc folder, my suggestions are this.

Buck Vantage series

http://www.buckknives.com/index.cfm?event=products.search&SearchTerms=vantage&x=0&y=0

There sure to have a vantage to fit your needs, depending on what size and materials you want.
Personally i d go for the Vantage select if your'e on a budget, Bucks 420HC is great stuff.
(Pay no attention to the Msrp's on that website, you should be able to find the same knife for around %60 Msrp.)
The Vantages are GREAT knives, the Vantage pro has materials commonly found on knives that cost three times as much.

Next to the vantage series, the Skyline is my second favorite budget knife, you could always get another and bend the clip out.

A third option would be a spyderco Tenacious, or one of the other budget minded spydies (Persistance, ambitious, or resilience, depending on youre size preference.)

You could also go for a spyderco delica or endura, if you want.

The endura or delica often come up on the exchange section of blade forums for sub $50.

Also, may i ask how youre skyline ended up in the trash?

You cant go wrong with any of these.
Good luck,
Adin

I agree with FireAnt. Been carrying a leek for five years or so. I just bought several new knives cause I thought I was tired of it. After carrying each new one for awhile guess whats back in my pocket...yeah that's right, the Leek. Outta all the other new ones the RAT 1 is probably my other favorite but it is pretty large and really overkill for the office but a heck of a knife for the money

I agree with the above suggestions to just bend the clip out if you really like the Skyline. It is a great knife, no doubt. And finding a new one that you like as much may be hit or miss if considering replacing one you were in love with.

On the other hand, if you are looking to try something new, this is as good an excuse as any to get another pattern and maker. I like the BUCK Vantage pattern but don't own one.

I can tell you that I purchased a Kershaw Blur on Amazon a couple of months past in their 420HC. It was $32 delivered! It is an excellent knife, slim enough to fit in any pants pocket and the 420 hollow ground blade will take a really mean edge quite easily.

Skyline clip can easily be bent out. Why don't you just get another one? They're terrific knives.

The OD-1 / Leek are great knives too, but if you like the Skyline, just go for that again.

If you're open to the idea of a small fixed blade, you could pick up an Izula for less then $50 shipped.

Wow! I was not expecting this many responses. Thanks a lot to everyone!

I haven't really liked the spyderco knives but I'm starting to warm up to them.
Right now I'm thinking of maybe a Delica, I really like the looks/handle of the tenacious just not the size, is there an about 3" long blade close to the tenacious?, I'm also considering a blem leek from kershawguy, of course the skyline is still a possibility.
The main reason I'm not immediately purchasing another skyline is because I would like to try another knife.
I like the Izula but the only place I can carry a knife at work is in my pocket so a neck knife won't work, unless they can be comfortably carried in a pocket.
I'm not really found of the benchmade's mentioned or the vantage.

As to how I lost my knife, I work at Subway (in a Walmart), I was breaking down boxes to be taken to the trash compacter in Walmart. I placed my knife on top of the cart of garbage to fold a box and I forgot it there. Yes I know I'm a complete idiot for putting my knife there and I paid the price

Please keep the suggestions coming, they are very helpful.

I think that, in general, if you liked the skyline then you know what you can go to any wally world and spend 35 bucks to get something that worked well. as far as the clip goes, clips are easy to bend out. if you want to try another knife, then the leek would work. the assistance is really fun, the blade shape is nice, it sharpens up really well, and the blems are cheap. the only problem with blems is that is something serious breaks, then you are on your own. however, for cutting cardboard, I say that was not something you would have to worry about.
