I still wouldn't lose complete faith in knife clips though. I have over the years developed an unconcious instinct to slap my pockets everytime I stand up, just to do a quick tactile inventory.
 
I believe knife loss usually happens while reaching in your pocket for other things. That's why I carry only my knife in my knife pocket anymore. After a short time you never put your hand in that pocket except to grab your knife.

Yeah, I'd agree with that.
I only have my larger knife in rear pocket, and a smaller knife in front coin pocket (unless I am wearing slacks/chinos that day), so it definitely helps if you're only reaching in and out of those pockets for knives and nothing else.
 
For your designated rough activity pants you could sew a small loop of shock cord into the pocket and hook the pocket clip on the cord then onto your actual pocket.
