Lost USPS money order what do I do?

Ok heres the story..
Just before I leave on vacation I buy a knife from a fellow forumite on another forum that I rarely visit..but its a knife that I wanted for a long time..I offer to paypal..I hear no response back..then I offer to money order and he accepts and gives me his addy.

I get a USPS money order for $86.50 to include shipping and insurance and ship it off to him and email him a JPEG of the carbon copy of the money order..

10 days later ..I come back from vacation and no knife! I send an email asking whats up with this and he claims to have never recieved the money order.

I respond to his email saying that I will investigate at this end and could he look around for it cause its just got to be there..he replies by saying I know your worried..but sometimes it takes 10 weeks to get here..LaJolla CA.? Hmmmm

Anyway I am nervous..is there a way to put a stop payment on this money order..Check if it has been cashed..my slob at the Post office was most unhelpful today..I dont think I am being screwed but I dont know how to resolve this crap..

any help would be appreciated..

You have to wait 30 days before they will even check on it. You can file the form and pay something like $6 or $8 and then after the 30 day period they check on it and refund or tell you if it has been cashed.

By the way, did you put your home address for a return address?? I had a problem with sending a USPS Postal Money order. I was making a traded/cash deal with another forum member. I took the box with some knives, bought the money order right there, and put the money order in the box and watched the guy tape it up. Two days later, the guy got the package and asked where the money order was. I would have sworn that it was in there and thought the guy may have thrown away the money order with the packing material. 3 days later I got the money order returned in a "Loose in Mail" enevelope. Somehow it slipped out.
