I think that the BK7 is really there to fill the combat knife role in the Becker line-up. All of the most popular combat knives have blades than run around 7", give or take a little. Most service men don't want to carry something as large as the BK9, but they want more blade than 5" in the BK2. The BK7 also has the best tip design for penetration, as compared to the blunter profiles of the BK9 and BK2.
If I was in the service and going to carry a Becker, I'd carry the BK7 and the Necker.
