Lots of knives but what about safe drinking water?

Idaho is blessed with pure, clean water. We also have open range across most of the state so unless you're drinking from high mountain lakes you can pretty much guarantee to get giardia or cryptosporidium. I use my 15 dollar Aquamira filter bottle a LOT and it has always done me well. Because our water is so clean filtering out bulk chunks isn't a big issue-the microscopic bugs are. For that purpose it takes care of my filtering needs.

Safe drinking water is always something to think about when in a survival situation. Here is one of my survival kits that contains an Frontier Water Straw, 12 chlorine dioxide tablets, and a 1 quart water bag. By having these it gives me 2 different options in how to obtain clean drinking water. Also by wrapping a t-shirt or rag around the end of the water straw while sucking, it will act as a decent pre-filter lenghting the life of the straw in sediment rich water.

Great Minds Think Alike! That's a TT E&E Horizontal Pouch, excellent piece of gear! And that's where I had my Frontier Straw as well, right in the elastic holders for Cyalume Lightsticks.

333 - That is an excellent outfit and thanks for the link for your straw. I cannot always get mine so another source is a big plus.

I usually have the msr miniworks and a steripen i have drank out of some nasty water holes and havent got hershey squirts so they must work. The aquamira stuff rots your teeth if you drink to much of it plus they dont remove chemicals. The straws are cool for last ditch before boiling.

Good thread. I currently carry a canteen cup for boiling and a Frontier Straw for emergency filtration. I am planning on adding some Katadyn MicroPUR MP1 Water Purifier Tablets as well.

When you mention chemical pollutants that seems like a tougher problem. I am no expert, but it doesn't seem like anything short of a still would remove those. Does anyone with more knowledge know of any reasonably portable system that will remove chemical pollutants?

MSR Pocket, older PUR Hiker, big Katadyn Ceradyn gravity filter...

Water I got covered.

I carry a bandanna to filter the big choonks out, and Katadyn MP1 tabs most of the time. If I'm going to be out more than a weekend, I carry an MSR MicroWorks filter.

Damn that's funny Don! As soon as I got mine I saw those loops and the first thing I thought to put in there was that straw.
