I am waiting for the Spyker to arrive, (probably middle of the week) but i'm already afraid the blade will be a little too long for EDC. So, I'm looking at:

Manix 83mm (what about plain vs. comboblade? which and why?)

Poliwog: strong lock, strong blade, but is it a comfortable hold?

Persian: beautiful lines but is it durable enough and maybe too big?

Caly 3: (plain vs. spyderedge) which is best and why?

Of these, what do you guys think?

Thanks

JE

Persian 75 mm. It is very comfortable to hold, I like the blade, and the style is such that non-knife people won't mind it.

I don't like the angle of the poliwog's blade. Just personal preferance, I guess.

The ZDP Caly is intriguing though...

It is hard choice, especially for me. Full size Persian and Caly3 are my favorite knives and EDCs. I carry them every day, sometimes both of them. They are as close to being perfect for my need as it can be. Mini Manix is a tank and I do not need one for my every day needs, also I have Lil Temp. I cannot tell anything about Poliwog.
Full size Persian is the masterpiece. It is beautiful knife, most comfortable for my hand. I can use it with or without finger choil. 3.5” VG10 blade is the perfect size and cuts like a razor. I can only wish it would be full flat ground. I never felt that Persian is too big or not durable. I use it for about six month and did not break it. I do not use my knives to pry anything bigger than staples.
PE Caly3. I love fall in love with this knife when I saw proto picture from Amsterdam Show and was waiting long time to get it. I was little nervous to open the box, but Caly3 exceeded my expectations. It is also beautiful. 3” full flat ground blade is an excellent cutter and good in the office environment. G10 handle is very agronomical and give you an exceptional grip. I use finger choil and traction grooves are great.
I have both of them in my pockets as I type. I cannot say which one is better or loved more. You will not go wrong with any of them, but both are better.
Good luck.

I just returned from the knife shop. I was looking to buy a small Persian but ended up buying a Caly3. The small Persian is really nice but I already have a large version which I carry for night time walks.

The Caly3 is a lot like the Chinses Folder I used to carry. The blade is leaf-like and reminds me of the old Bob Lum.

For bigger or outdoor tasks I have an light weight Endura with 1/2 serration and a Para Military is on the way from the factory. (Factory credit after Spdyerco had a mishap with my original Chinese folder while it was in for repair. I say "original" because I bought a spare just in case Spyderco discontinued the model without asking me first.) Those knives will also double as self defense knives, but they're really just for days when I don't feel like being discreet.

So ... today I was in your postion and I chose the Caly3. However, I can't say I'd do the same thing if I didn't already have the large model Persian folder. The Persian was $10 cheaper by the way.

"Manix 83mm (what about plain vs. comboblade? which and why?)

Caly 3: (plain vs. spyderedge) which is best and why?"

I can't remember which the 83mm is but if it is the Mini-Manix, I say stick with the PE. I really like the CE on the full size Manix and I actually think it is better than the PE. On the Mini, the CE just doesn't make sense.

The Calypso III is best left as PE since it is such a nice slicer. You can put a SE on any blade and it will cut but a nice full flat ground blade like what the Caly III has just deserves PE.

Out of the two, the Caly III in PE is a great choice. In fact, out of any knife, the PE Caly III is a great choice. There are not a lot of knives that can compeat with all the Caly 3 brings to the table.

I have a couple of Polliwogs and love them because of their unique shape and the ball-bearing lock.

Haven't held a Caly 3 but everyone swears by them. Would probably be the best choice for EDC. Right now my EDC is a CF BG42 Military.

I prefer PE on my knives. If I were cutting rope and/or cardboard everyday (all day long) I might go with a SE. PE seems to be more suited in my book for EDC carry. If you open a lot of boxes, that tape adhesive is hard to get off the serrated edges.

"If you open a lot of boxes, that tape adhesive is hard to get off the serrated edges."

Good point. Food gets stuck in them as well. Not a big deal but something to think about.

I can't say enough good things about the Caly 3. I think is as close to perfect as you can get. My only wish is that they could make it just a little lighter. I don't know if titanium could have been used on the liners but that might have reduced the weight a little. Just nit picking, I really like the knife and it feels great in the hand. The extra weight lets it settle into you hand and gives you more control than a ultra light knife. It is by no means a heavy knife, just a little heavy compared the Calypso Jr. I think the Caly 3 is a better knife in all respects than the Calypso Jr. BTW. I have owned both and I gave up my CJ when I got the Caly 3.

My Caly 3 is my favorite EDC knife. I got a plain edge because if what I plan to cut with it.

The Poliwog is an incredibly comfortable knife. Some people don't like how wide it is when it's folded.

I have to wear slacks for my day job and I carry a Para-Military in my front pocket. It is so thin and so light I almost forget I have it with me.
