Lots of talk about this east coast hurricane

The storm is now a very powerful cat 3 hurricane. Take precautions if you are in the impact areas, especially the Carolinas. I distinctly remember watching Katrina cross over Florida into the gulf and thinking, "this could be bad". That was a few days before landfall in N.O. . I don't know if we will feel it or not here, but I have a feeling that this might get serious. My buddy wants us to head for the coast to do a little surfing this weekend   . I'll probably hang back to see to it that my parents are ok if it gets close. I hope everyone comes through unscathed. Here is an interesting link to possible wind conditions from the National Hurricane Center. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/#IRENE

Yeah i was a little nervous here in central FL till she moved off coast...

I live in a river town. With all the recent heavy rain the river's already at it's max capacity. There will definitely be flooding. How much is yet to be seen.
I remember during Hurricane Floyd around 1999-2000 they were riding jet skis up & down Main St & I seen my first ever funnel cloud.Scary stuff!

I just talked to my brother and my nephew is vacationing in the Bahamas. Hope they get to high ground and don't get too beat up.

Win

DON'T DRIVE THROUGH STANDING WATER. If you think your car won't make it through, don't try. If you think your truck or SUV won't make it, don't try. I made the choice to drive through standing water about ten years ago, I was lucky to make it through.

After the storm comes through, look up before you exit whatever building you were just in.

Stay safe out there.

Don't go surfing, really bad idea.

Where in MD are you? Unless the storm decides to do a sudden exit stage right, much of MD will be feeling TS, or near TS, force winds. With the potential for more. 200 mile+ wind field is no joke though, and this Irene is likely still strengthening.

So, don't go surfing. :)

I can handle myself in very rough surf. We may go out on body boards. Right now I'm just outside DC by about 7 minutes to the east. We will drive down on Friday to the DE beaches and maybe hit the Indian River Inlet on Saturday and Sunday.

I grew up down here in South Florida. I'm a guy who doesn't like going to the beach unless the waves are up and I can have a little battle with the ocean- so I understand the sentiment. That being said, there's a difference between rough surf and major hurricane storm surge. Rip currents like you wouldn't believe and, well, this:

The storm surge in your area obviously won't be as bad as Katrina but, and especially if you get a close enough hit, it won't be that much different either.

You are right, if it is really crazy we won't go in. If by Sunday, it's clean 6-8' you won't be able to keep me out.

I got curious so I checked some of the beach cams out of Miami. It's definitely surfable down there but probably too choppy to be much fun. Irene is around ~230 miles out, however. If she stays on her projected course or, let's hope not, goes west of it, I don't believe I'd be going in the water if I were you. As of now, the NHC is projecting close enough of a direct hit for you that I'd seriously be considering making a shopping trip for some basics before doing anything else. See here: http://www.hurricanetrack.com/ If you scroll down to the map and click on the plot point closest to your location, you will see a projected wind field. Just a degree or so west of it's expected track and your area is potentially in for a very bad one. I'm not trying to scare you but you really should take this seriously.

On the other hand, a degree or two east of its expected track and the surfing ought to be great. :)

Hey man, when you get a good soaking on the shore (Rehoboth to Ocean Shitty), standing water gets bad. I had a rooster tail off my Chevy Blazer the whole way home a couple years ago, and that was a good rain storm, up Rte 1. Be safe on the shore man!

My buddy's little Mako boat is in the water down there. Probably definitely headed that way at least to get the boat out. I'm reminded of a 50 something Japanese man I worked with in SoCal who's 20 year old son would make a beeline for the coast whenever there was a tsunami warning. We just shook our heads when we were talking about that. Water temperature is going to be 80ish. I'll make sure not to get myself killed.

Keep your eyes open for me. I'll be driving from Raphine VA to Federalsburg MD tomorrow and probably Saturday.
Be careful.

^ Drive safe in that high profile rig, Mack. Could get a little windy in that neck of the woods.

It was pretty windy this morning across there. I'll be empty coming back across the bay bridge. It's a good thing that i'm a good swimmer.

I hope you're well on your way back westward by mid-afternoon Saturday. This storm is, so they are saying, stronger than any that has hit New England since 1938 and it's coming across the mid Atlantic first. I just saw a storm tide map that projects 10-15 foot surge (given a cat 2 impact) across coastal Delaware and Maryland. 14-15 foot all the way up in the Inner Harbor. ETA: Got my geography all muddled up. Not the Inner Harbor, more like Delaware Bay.

Stay safe up there guys.

Yeah, as of now we have canceled our plans to head east. I will be staying in the Washington area for the duration. Latest update came in at 11:00AM. Check for details with the link in the OP.

I know here is CT a lot of people are gearing up. almost kinda sad that people are so un prepared before hand. Took a ride to walmart and home depot for some items and people are buying up everything. Couldn't get a flashlight if you wanted.
Just got home from Dri-locking a friends basement. Had to laugh when she called me this morning. talk about waiting till the last minute.
Anyway, I'm ready. Bring her on. But no you won't catch me surfing.

I heard about 5 foot waves in the Potomac River on the weatherband station. I won't have to go too far to catch some tasty waves. Hopefully, Connecticut is out of the path, my friend. Stay safe.
