Lots of talk about this east coast hurricane

I'm in Denton this morning about to go to sleep. All of the roads to Ocean city are closed off. The drawbridge was working overtime this morning with ships heading to sea.
It looks like they are taking this seriously.I'm not sure where I'll be. I should know this afternoon.
I'd love to take one of the beautiful Sportfishers that are docked here out a couple hundred miles. Ya know, just to get it out of harms way.

I'm on the Eastern Shore of Va, and I have to admit I'm actually getting a bit nervous about this one. We live far enough away from the water that we shouldn't see any flooding, except whatever happens because of the rain fall, but 100+ mph winds around here..I can't even imagine what this place is going to look like Monday morning. At this point, the girlfriend and I are debating heading to Richmond for the weekend, since I doubt there's anything we could do if something happened to the house anyway.

Today is supposed to be a pretty nice day around here. A friend and I are playing golf this afternoon in Frederick. I think that I will be headed to my parent's by early tomorrow afternoon through Sunday. They have dozens of massive trees in the yard so there will be tree limbs the size of telephone poles to deal with if the wind gets really bad. The rainfall totals are also going to be through the roof, like 8-10 inches in the metropolitan area. Good luck, everyone.

I experienced storm devistation first hand in Charleston SC duing HUGO (+1) Most folks are concerned about high winds when in fact it's the storm suge that is responsible for the lion's share of casualties. IF this storm gains in strength at it's present course, Long Island will be devistated due to storm surge from three directions. The population denisty there will be a logistical nightmare with regards to evacuation. Best advice is GET OUT early..!

I'll be here until two this afternoon and then I'm going to Suffolk VA. I guess they want me right in the teeth of the storm.

I'm in NY right in the middle of where its supposed to pass through. News guy said to expect power loss for a few days and even weeks in some areas depending on how bad the damage is. In Manhattan (about 30-45 mins away from me), they are shutting down ALL public transportation tommorow afternoon in case of severe flooding. They aren't allowing private cars in, or out either. This is going to be interesting.

I played about 30 holes of golf this afternoon. It's was really humid but calm. Much of the sky is like an eerie light pink color. Hit the store on my way home and the parking lot was jam packed. Haven't really checked but I think it's like 100mph w/ 120 gusts right now.I'm guessing the eye is about 14-15 hrs from NC. Take care, folks.

You must be close to me, I'm on the western side of Nassau Co. and the track to this storm looks like its coming right through town. A little swing to the east would be good for me, but obviously bad for someone else.

Stay safe

I made it southwest of the storm. I'll keep you guys in it's path in my prayers.

Yeah. Im not far from nassau county. Hopefully it won't be too bad but as they say, hope for the best but prepare for the worst. stay safe as well.

thanks protourist and numerals. Been prepping all day. Just finished touching up my trusty kabar. Last storm we had, i used it to clear branches from a MASSIVE tree that fell on my street. I'm suspecting it will be getting more use come tomorrow. Anyone else in the path, stay safe.

I heard about 5 foot waves in the Potomac River on the weatherband station. I won't have to go too far to catch some tasty waves. Hopefully, Connecticut is out of the path, my friend. Stay safe.

Danny please don't go surfing in this.Every year we hear about surfers & so called "strong swimmers" drowning while surfing in a TS or hurricane.I think NC already has a casualty from this storm.
You just can't underestimate the the shear power of the ocean.

Irene is supposed to cut right through CT, MA, and NH. It will be less powerful by then, but this area hasn't seen a hurricane landfall for 20 years. Could get messy up here.

They've already had 4 deaths from this darn thing.

Hunker down on Sunday and have some cocktails! Stay safe everyone.

Glenn

Please everyone in the path of this monster........stay indoors, stay safe!:(
Prayers and thoughts from down South..........

Serious hurricanes are a regular feature here in Oz too. We have been watching the news updates on American TV, (my wife is American for those who don't know), and we have friends in Virginia who have been keeping us updated. Take my word for it, these things can and do kill people, and not just from the wind. Keep away from any storm water you see, this will kill you just as easily as the wind.

Looks nasty, stay safe guys. If you're in the path of it, think very seriously about going somewhere else.

Yeah, I decided against it. We're headed down on Monday instead to do some damage assessment and hopefully a little surfing after the mayhem has subsided. If the officials say stay out then we will. I am adventurous but I'm not insane. :) Right now in DC we're getting sporadic showers from the outermost bands and little wind gusts here and there. Our worst here will be after midnight with winds 25-45 gusting to up to 65 and we are expecting ~ 3-5" of rain. Should be ok here. Smoke and prayers for all of you in the line of fire, friends.

Ready as I am able to be!

I am worried about the tornados that could precede the hurricane, but there is not much to be done about that.

Living in floriduh, I've been through a half dozen hurricanes or more I've lost track. Last bad one was the charlie trio. Worst part of a weaker storm, and good thing this beast is weakening, is flooding and loss of power. then the shortages of batteries and fuel. Trust me 2 to 4 weeks without power is very tough. Having a generator helps, but only if you got enough fuel. If the power is out for awhile fuel will go dry. One thing I've learned from all the storms I've road through is there is a fine line between civilization and chaos and civilization is held together by supply of food, goods, running water, and power. Once a few of these disappeear for awhile trouble begins. Nothing brings out the worst in people like a hurricane. Hopefully all those yankees:) will behave better than the folks around where I live did during the last hurricane trio. Stay safe ya'll.
