Hello;

I live near Baton Rouge. I have an interest in making knives / keychain gadgets / small nut & bolt metal sculptures.

Just curious if there are any like minded people in my area. I am currently in the process of setting up a small shop at my home.

So far shop includes:
* CNC Plasma Table (4' X 4')
* Ellis 1600 Band Saw
* Beaumont KMG Grinder on the way (if they ever start taking orders again)
* Miller MIG & TIG (need to learn)
* Lincoln AC/DC Stick
* Looking at a small milling machine value vs. learning curve for a non-machinest

The CNC Plasma Table was bought for income supplement, but should definitely help with the other interest . . .

What I don't have is experience doing what I want to do as for as the fun stuff.

Steve in Louisiana . . . :)

Steve, As Andy said, come on up. Alec Devall from Baton Rouge is coming. I will speak with him and maybe you can ride up with him. Promises a good time and you will learn a lot.

Oh no . . . good timing on my request for help . . . I thank you guys very much, but the next 2 to 3 weekends I will be snowed under running electrical, airlines, Ethernet and trying to get my plasma table up and running.

Have a couple guys coming from out of state to help me set-up & calibrate . . .and showing me how to run this thing in return for teaching AutoCAD to them.

I will make note of you guys names and as soon as I am free I will contact you. I thank ya'll very much. I never expected such a quick return on a request for help. Thanks, Steve

No discussion of learning knifemaking in your part of the country would be complete without mentioning the Moran School of Bladesmithing in Little Washington, AR. (About 300 miles north of you.)

They also hold several hammer-ins there each year.

Going there would be one of the best 5-6 hour drives you ever took.

I'm a little west of you in Lafayette. I don't have a shop here though, as I'm stuck in an apartment and now a broke student.

Don't feel bad, I'm a broke guy because of a shop . . .:)

You could always put a grinder on wheels and take it to the patio . .

I met a guy in Alabama that makes metal nut/bolt/bent wire sculptures on his patio. Uses a micro torch to weld.

The manager leaves him alone since the wife of the owner of the complex has a few of his pieces . . .

Steve, sorry I haven't contacted you. Work has been killer. I live right outside BR in Central Area. I'll try calling you tomorrow

OK, sounds good . . . I'm busy too trying to get my little fab shop set up in my back yard shop. The knife making thing has always been in the back of my mind and shopping for a grinder got it going again. I have a friend that lives out your way that used to have a Army Surplus Store in his front yard.

Take care,
Steve
