I own more BM folders than any other one brand,I carry daily a BM and I just have one question.

WHY don't they make a LARGE folder for those of us that want to carry a REAL blade, like a clip point that is solid and state of the art.

I carry CS knives for the reason being = they make a large [ yes ,even too large ] a folder.

I truly love the size of the CS XL Voyager.

I would be happy to pay to own that size folder made by BM.

I am sure that I am not the only one that feels this way ,the fact is CS sells LOTS of their XL folders for just that reason.

Thanks for letting me rant.

BM's had a few, now discontinued, that bordered on mega-folder status. The Ruckus, the Skirmish, and the Onslaught come to mind. Seemed to be a pattern forming with their larger folders and what they were named. The Onslaught in particular can still be found online and in the Exchange here.

I have a Rukus AND a Skirmish = I thought I did say LARGE ?.

I see a 5" blade as about the smaller size for me,just a personal thing.

Oh,and they would also need to make it no heavier than a BM 710 or a CS XL voyager.

The CS XXL Vaquaro is an example of TOO large even for me to EDC = but I own one and have carried it.

I can CCW/EDC a CS Rajah I & II,and do as a laugh.

btw = I am 5'4" and weigh about 190

What do you do with your knife in a normal day that requires something that large for EDC??

Wanting a large blade is your business and fair enough. The Contego is about as large a folder as I will carry. I wouldn't mind handling a CS XL Espada just for kicks, though :D

I used to have one of the Red Class versions before they switched it over to the HD line around 2008/2009.

I'd say it was an interesting knife. The closing mechanism was certainly unique and the balance was a bit blade heavy too but overall I liked it.

Ended up gifting it to a friend.

I've never seen that one! Pretty smart design, and one hell of a long blade for a folder.

I was VERY curious as to why I was enamored of the large blade [ especially the Bowie ] myself .

So in retrospect I looked back on my history of the knife, the VERY beginning was a TV show "Jim Bowie" with the actor Scott Forbes.

Silly as that show seems now [ I have it on DVD ] it was the reason I was a large blade fan,as near as I can figure.

"Jeramiah Johnson" with Robert Redford did nothing to ease that love of the large blade either !!.

I was born and raised in NYC and was allowed to own blades back in that day [ 1950 & 60's ] .

I then carried a LARGE blade for S/D for 25 years that I lived in that city.

then I became an LEO and my first back up tool was the large folder.

Hope that explains my thought process.

Now I just carry one to back up the BUG :-)

I even carry a fixed blade [ concealed ] once in a while, and of course there is the chopping blade and the camp/hunting blades that are large AND small.

I can not imagine that "huge folder" market segment being too big. And it has already Cold Steel catering to it. So I do not think too many knife manufacturers would be interested in trying to enter it too: it is simply not that attractive compared to other niche segments they might consider.

Can you tell me what the XXL Vaquero is? Blade size and all. I've never heard of that model.

I have an older Vaquero Grande that has a 6" blade and the newer Tri-Ad lock Vaquero XL that has a 5.5" blade but never heard of a XXL version?

You said this version is even too large for you and I'm wondering what the blade size is as I'm not familiar with it.

Just looked for the XXL Vaq,but its missing in action.

Its in the house and I will measure the blade = but from memory I seem to recall it is about a 7" blade.

The XL Espada maybe?

That one has a 7.5" blade. Largest CS folder that I know of.

I don't even like fixed blade knives that big. The cost of designing and tooling for a new pattern knife is very expensive. I have to believe that it would be cost prohibitive because the number of sales would probably be very low...
Just think what the cost of such a knife would be, if BM made one. Of course they could use overseas production like CS to keep the cost down.

For me a 4"blade is just about right and has been for years. First with the AFCK and now the Contego but I have found the Onslaught and the Rukus surprisingly comfortable to carry. In the case of the Rukus though mine are safe queens so I have to admit I never really carried one for any length of time. Only pocked it to see how it felt but seemed ok.

As Far as the AFCK, 710 & Contego that I have carried for long periods of time they are very comfortable and easy to carry as far as I'm concerned.

I've carried the XL Voyagers (5.5") also and you do notice them but I wouldn't say they were all that bad. But I'd add lose fitting pants are almost a must lol...

I beg to disagree,my reasoning is that CS still sells LOTS of really big fixed & folder blades.

And their prices are NOT cheap [ nor worth the pricing, judging by BM's prices ].

So BM making a large blade is logical IF you look at what sells and how many offerings there are in the large blade market.

btw = I generally wear [ 90+ % of the time ] 5:11's or Tru-Spec pants,so pocket space for the large folders is no problem.

And PBCG = that is most likely a yes as to the XL Espada .

Memory gives my agada ,as it takes vacation too often.

It is a HUGE folder, and one that even I profess to leaving home ---- most of the time.

But the Rajah I & II go out often, they have a place where a gun is not allowed [ Canada ], and yes that too is not allowed but facing confiscation is better than facing jail .

Just so y'all don't think I am a total loon,my other hunting & camping blades are about 4 to 5" and that is not as small as the deer gutting blades that are even smaller.

I just like and carry a large S/D, hunting blade,where ever I can [ most places ].

610 Rukus, 741 Onslaught and the Adams are the largest offerings in folders. In my case, they're way too big. But my 741 always makes my wife smile since I prefer 3" or so models. But in the kitchen I've tested it and what a slicer!

You could very well be correct. In all honesty I never follow that segment closely. Cold Steel has a different clientele though :D
Their marketing style lends itself to a slightly different crowd. Not saying that's bad, because it obviously works well for them. For the record, I have nothing against CS products. I've owned a handful of folders, all in the medium size range though, and they were excellent knives. I still own 3 of their fixed blades, Master Hunter, and mini & regular size Pendletons.

I just don't know if that market would work for BM. Who knows, maybe it would be very popular. For me, with the larger size of folders, it makes more sense to carry a fixed blade. I live in blue jeans though, so anything really big doesn't lend itself to comfortable carry.
That's the great thing though, there are endless choices because we all have different tastes...

LOL... I was starting to think you might be a loon, but after reading that, you are OK... :D

I looked at a Mini Rukus at one of the local knife stores a few years back. There was something about them that I liked aesthetically, but didn't think they would be comfortable. I was wrong. It was very comfortable, but I remember thinking to myself, this sucker is huge :D
