Love It or Hate It- Dogbone Push Dagger ( with mini-WIP)

Like an alien visiting in a cowboy costume.
David

they ARE among us! lol
(explains the otherwordly talent going on in custom knives these days)

ok I love it !! probably over the top but since it is a takedown it could it have been made to be mounted with the handle inline with the blade and 90 degrees?

Well John, you can guess my answer. LOVE it of course. Congratulations to Jim for the idea and you for pulling it off so well. I liked it when I first saw it.

Well John I am a complete Dog lover at heart! So how could I not love a Dogbone Push Dagger? LOL.

Very well excecuted all the way around from the Damascus, grip & using Ancient Walrus Ivory.
I am of the believe that we should only use Ivory from those species that are already extinct so Kudos on the Ancient Walrus Ivory too!

When I read the title of the thread I was doubtful. When I saw the knife I was saying "really neat". When I saw the pair I was impressed and into it. When I saw the whole set up including Paul's leather I was gaga over it.

Congrats Jim! As Coop said, great vision. What a cool set. Great work, John!!!

Yep! The two together clinches it IMHO. This alien hasn't crashed...just dug in the spurs and reachin' for the stars. Go John!

I love it completely! It's the best thing I've seen for a while. I'm a big fan of your work. Thanks Craig

Outstanding John, you certainly are a glutton for punishment. Sounds like you enjoyed the build and kudos to the buyer for such an original idea.

Chalk another up for love it!

I keep checking to see if anyone agrees with me, it looks oddly conceived to me. Well, nope! .. I must be the alien among us. :) Nanu nanu!

I love it too.

What a great pair there.

The only thing I would change if it were mine (meaning I was suddenly rich enough to order as set for my self) would be the finals.

the flat knurled nut on the bowie looks fantastic. On the dog bone push dagger it also looks great, but I would want a rounded final.

It was probably a perfect match for the dogbone bowie which was made first?

That is more from a user perspective, and I have not held it, so am just going by "It looks" here.

Thanks for sharing that lovely set. I bet the owner is tickled pink with both!

Well, folks, it's interesting to see so many positive reactions to the little Dogbone Push.

As I told Jim, having planned it out with him, made the knife, and handled it a lot, I've grown quite fond of it, but understand it isn't "the usual."

It really is comfortable to hold; the finial and cap fill the back between the end caps, and the domed pins smooth out the handle angles just as in a Dogbone Bowie.

As mentioned, the handle may not be the perfect size for concealment, though the knife is smaller than it looks in the photo.

We actually reduced the handle size in the planning process, and Paul's sheath would even out the shape under a coat, but I imagine this knife as the prize possession of some Gold Rush San Franciscan, who wouldn't be adverse to showing it off a bit.

Thanks for the comments.

John

I'm a sucker for odd and out of the ordinary, that's why I love dogbones (I owned a few in my time) and push daggers (still own a beauty) but when I first looked at this one I was not immediately convinced. But after looking at it for quite some time now I'm really liking it, especially because it is daring and out of the ordinary. Together with the bowie it is an extremely nice package.

It takes guts to order and make something like this so all praise to Jim and John for this project.

I want to thank everyone for how well John’s Dogbone Pushdagger has been received.

I have been collecting custom knives for about 25 years. I mainly collect forged knives by ABS makers. I have folders, hawks, hunters, fighters, and many different Bowies. My favorite style of knife is the Dogbone Bowie and that is how we came up with this handle design.

When I decided that I wanted John to make me his first Pushdagger, I put a lot of thought into the design before coming up with the Dogbone handle. I viewed all of the photos of Pushdaggers that I could find on the Internet, read as many books that had Pushdaggers in them as I could find, and spent time at the BladeShow and other shows viewing Pushdaggers.

Here is a Will & Finke Pushdagger:

A Michael Price Pushdagger:

What I found was that Pushdagger handles were made in many eclectic styles, shapes and materials. They are plain, fancy, straight, curved, oval, centered and not centered.

They seem to show the owners and the maker’s personalities. I knew that John would not make anything that was not first-class, so when he agreed to make this knife I was confident that it would be a great knife.

This handle design may be different, but John had given me exactly what I wanted in a Pushdagger.

Thanks again John.

Great and different stuff! I have 2 push daggers in my collection and they are fun additions to the big fixed blades and the tactical & fancy folders.

Jim, as you (and John) started the energy around push daggers with this well conceived and well received knife how about starting a "Show me your Push Daggers" thread. This knife kicking it off would be cool
