Loveless Designed Hideout Knife

Am I correct in assuming green canvas micarta scales over red liners is pure Loveless ?
Meaning, RWL favored or sold a lot of that combo ?
Congrats on a top shelf acquisition and piece, Bob !

This knife seems to have its own energy flowing through it. Absolutely love the way it comes together to serve its intended purpose. The "Improved Handle" looks great in the pic and I really would like to handle this design to get a feel for the grip and overall balance. Would love to see a shot showing the tapered tang with the green and red

Pardon my drooling but...Man, this knife is talkin' to me. I need to see if Marcus will make one in black micarta with white liners to go with my Khukuri.

Niiiiiice work, Marcus. Congrats Bob!

Very good idea :)

I'll try and remember to put up that shot when the Hideout comes in tomorrow - unless Marcus happened to take one before he shipped.

she's a beauty! Good score Bob, and a great build Marcus

Thank you all for the kind comments. :) Unfortunately, I did not take any additional photos. Too busy keeping up with orders these days, and I can literally spend over an hour trying to get one good shot.

Laurence: the Hideout grinds are done on a 3" wheel. Stock thickness is 3/16" -the grinds are really deep and hard to photograph (due to reflections and the distal taper). Coop does one heck of a job!

Jim: I'm no expert (so anyone that knows more details, feel free to correct or add-in info):

The Hideout was originally designed with the "Improved Handle" feature.

I believe the "Improved handle" design started in the Loveless-Johnson years on hunting knives, they took a lot of work to do (mostly done with files and sandpaper) -the finger "ridges" were more aggressive/sharper and there was no collar.

Improved handles were also made in the Loveless-Merritt years, the "ridges" became more subtle and a nickel silver or heat treated 416 stainless collar was added to the front of the handle. Probably a decade ago (mid-90's) the "Improved handle" feature was omitted as it is deemed that it wasn't really necessary, but the collar was retained.

Many designs in Bob's lineup featured the "Improved Handle" design -there are 5" Straight/ Utility Hunters, 4" Straight/ Utility/ Dropped Hunters / Semi-Skinners / Crooked skinners, Piker, Caper, Randall, Paring knife, and several one offs, etc. Even the Thomas "Lamb" designs were originally made with "Improved Handles."

David is right, the concept wasn't requested from the Loveless Shop very often, so it didn't really catch on.

Doug: You are correct in assuming that Bob favored selling knives in Canvas Micarta (mostly green and black) over red liners.

Bob: Thank you. :)

REALLY want one....Marcus, if you would consider making one in LSCF or LVCF, please drop me a PM.

I haven't seen a version of the Hideout that ever looked better, including models from The Shop.

You are demonstrating some incredible workmanship right here.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Doug,
When I started knife making in the late 90's I was fortunate to have spent a few days in the Loveless shop in Riverside. Bob had a open door for any that wanted to stop by on a Saturday and talk knives. He loved Green canvas Micarta and purchased a lot of it from Angus-Campbell here in Los Angeles. His preference for red liners was said by him to being like a touch of red lipstick on a pretty girl.

Bob: Good for YOU!

Guys: Thanks for the crystal clear education. I"ve shot many of these and simply didn't know the distinctions.

Marcus, if I may:

I have hunters with REALLY thin finger grooves, but all the hideouts are just like Marcus' version.

Cool thread.

Coop

Coop, I think you'll notice that most all stag Loveless Hideouts don't have an improved handle, which really changes the handling characteristics significantly. I've seen a few stag hunters with the improved handle , but never a stag Hideout. Just an observation.

Once I get Marcus' knife (tomorrow), I'll post a couple shots that compare it side-by-side with the Loveless, and include shots of the tapered tang, as was earlier requested.

Here are some images, as promised, showing the tapered tang and the comparative between the Loveless Hideout and the Marcus Lin Hideout. The difference in bladewidth is about 1mm, with about a 5mm greater difference in overall length, all of which is in the handle. I hope the images I've included display the "improved" features adequately.

A superb example of a Hideout, Marcus - thanks!

Bob

Great piece, Bob, congratulations. Thanks for the comparison, Marcus has done a great job.

I'm gonna be a heathen and say I like Marcus Lin's version of this one BETTER.

I betcha we could do a poll and probably get a 50/50 spread of opinion on this. Surely, that's the way I feel about comparing the two. Both are superb pieces, and fortunately I've had the opportunity to have both in-hand. Marcus' Hideout is a hair "thicker" around than the Loveless. The Loveless edges are slightly more roundish than sharpish. I love both micartas. The green micarta on the Lin has incredible visual appeal. The burgundy on the Loveless is stunning in the light.

But the Loveless was already such a perfect fit to my hand that I will probably favor it subconsciously, no matter what.

Great comparison pics. Thanks Bob!

Can't comment on which I like better as I've never handled a Loveless or Loveless design with the Improved Handle :( . They are both super. How cool must it be to have them side-by-side to compare! Bob, you are the King!!!
