Loveless Hunter questions

Interesting. I have my eye on one of the ph1s on eBay. Be a good place to start.

They're a couple on there, but be careful as there are Chinese made Schrade ones that people try to sell at the same price. They are definitely not the same quality. While I have several Chinese Schrade pocket knives and they're pretty ok knives, I would rather have the USA made ones.
Definitely look for this imho20211007_115820.jpg

In that price range, get a custom.

I can't recommend Phillip Patton Enough!!

He is a frequent contributor here.

There are many custom makers that would hit that sweet spot of a price range.

There are many sizes and patterns that I would consider "Loveless".

Peruse the custom forum, and the custom for sale for.

Yes I’m careful to avoid the new made in China schrades.

I am researching all the names suggested and just doing my research. I appreciate all the responses.

You might want to look at TK Steingass also. Tim makes a nice knife.

I have won a ph1 on eBay. If y’all get lucky, I’ll get pictures.

I’m already considering fancy scales. Guess I’ll see how it handles first.

The search is far from over, but I’ve started scratching the itch.

I have received and played with the ph1 a few days now. Interesting. It does fit my hand. If the grip was any shorter it wouldn’t though. So at least I have a reference.

The knife I received wasn’t in the best condition. The pictures didn’t show it, as the detail was blurry, but it had been polished and the handle scales melted near the bolster. I reshaped them acceptably and sanded them to 1000 grit and then polished. I might sand them finer as it didn’t bring a luster when I polished, but 1000 was the finest paper I have currently.

The weight is surprising. Heavier than the buck 192 and more pommel heavy. But not too much. It’s okay just need to get used to it.

The blade is in nice shape and it should take a rescale job well. I might try it myself, ain’t decided yet. I do fine carpentry, and have done some finish work on knives.

The sheath smells like mildew, another thing not mentioned in the listing before I received the knife. I tried spritzing it with vinegar. It may have killed the mildew but it now smells like a combo of the two. Guess I’ll make a new sheath or find a maker I like for it.

Anyways. It’s a neat knife and I plan to rehandle it and use it and probably pass it to my son.

Thanks for all the comments that have lead me this far.

The Loveless pattern drop point hunter is my favorite out in the woods knife. I have several variations, my favorite being this WC Davis which has been with me everywhere from Alaska, to Mexico, to Alabama and points in between.

This is Tim Hartman's (New Mexico) variation with a different handle. He also did the three in my avatar to the traditional pattern. Well within your price point without engraving.

This variation is by Koji Hara:

I sold this variation by Yale on this forum a couple years ago quite cheap:

Beretta made these under license from Bob. You can find them with a plastic handle very cheap, but spend the extra $50 and get the quince burl.

This Reddeix version came from New Zealand:

Charles Vestal did this version for me:

A couple makers from this board also make really nice Loveless pattern knives; Phillip Patton and T. Steingass being worth contacting.

I used to have that exact Yale!

To OP, check out the maker R.A. Rotella from Niagara NY. Pretty excellent Loveless patterns, I had a Field and Stream model from him that was flawless.

The Beretta is pretty nice, a Mike Lovett would be the best I know of as he had Bob’s blessing to make near identical copies. He had the deep grinds and handle contours down along with the extreme tapered tangs that a Loveless has. But would be in the $1K up range. Mike is no longer making knives.

If you ever handle a real Loveless made by Bob or one of Jim’s from the current shop, you’ll immediately see the difference and know why they’re so much in demand.

As Obsessed with Edges Obsessed with Edges posted Wayne Clay made some nice versions, I had a few. They are not very expensive in todays market and are bargains when you can find one.

Well I’m still playing with the ph1 and still looking for others that suit me too.

I did get the mildew smell out of the sheath. I soaked it in 50/50 vinegar water from a squirt bottle several times. Then best I recall, a mild bleach water and dawn bath. The smell persisted, though milder. I then dumped baking soda in a ziploc bag and put the sheath in that. Agitating it occasionally for about 2 months. That did the trick. I then give it a coat of paste wax.

The knife overall is nice. And it takes a keen edge. The love affair is in full swing.
