I'm planning on making a Loveless NY special pattern knife. I have been reading about and looking at as many NY Special images as I can but I still have some unanswered basic questions. What is the thickness of the blade stock? 3/16" or thinner ? Is the collar put on in same manner as a Chute Knife guard? or is it a bolster type of set up? I know that it is a double edge blade and it appears that only the clip is sharpened on the second edge. how thin is the rest of the unsharpened top edge/spine? My last question is what size wheel is used to grind the primary bevels? It looks like it is a pretty deep hollow grind and it would have to be done with a much smaller wheel then the 10" wheel I generally use.

thanks

Is the collar put on in same manner as a Chute Knife guard? or is it a bolster type of set up? I use 1/4" stock. Slot the material and slide it on from the bottom. Drill for two pins and solder on the collar. What you end up with is real thin bolsters. I think the Loveless Shop notches the bottom of the tang and the collar slides up into that notch.

I know that it is a double edge blade and it appears that only the clip is sharpened on the second edge. how thin is the rest of the unsharpened top edge/spine? The thickness of the top grind tapers from the thickness at the top end of the clip to around 0.080" give or take a little at the plunge.

My last question is what size wheel is used to grind the primary bevels? It looks like it is a pretty deep hollow grind and it would have to be done with a much smaller wheel then the 10" wheel I generally use. I use a three inch wheel to grind a New York Special.

I have a related question, hope I'm not hijacking.

Is there a Loveless knife with a snap in the handle?
Seems I saw a Thad Buchanon knife like this but I've searched for a picture and haven't been able to come up with one.

Thanks

Charles is an EXCELLENT source of info on this subject. If you'd like some more input, I'd recommend you post over in the custom section. There are a lot of collectors there that are well versed in Loveless. :)

Loveless was born in Ohio, spent time in the service, lived in Delaware, then moved to California. I'm sure there was some other stops along the way, but I never heard that he lived in the south.

Take care

Charles
