Low impact camping - Fire pan

if you get galvenized steel hot enough the zinc in the coating will burn off, and it is quite toxic to you. but bare steel or nickle plate should be ok as far as I know.

Yep, that's right. Thought about that just bebfore I went out to make a fire in it. When I was a kid, there was a book in the library at school that had a bunch of outdoor projects in it. One such projecct was a one-gallon steel can with one side cut out for a grill. They suggested using galvanized 1/4" mesh with the warning to burn the galvanizing off the wire before using the stove because the fumes were bad for you. Tell a kid something like that today and the EPA, FDA, HHS and probably the BATF would be looking for you.

Teflon is nasty too, as stated above. I worked in a Teflon plant for three years, back when you could smoke on the job, and the guys who managed to get a tiny flake of it on one of their smokes spent about a half hour in the stair well sitting on a step feeling like they were going to die.

I was able to pick up a 10" diameter, 3" Deep dog dish, a 10" grill and a stainless steel mess kit at a thrift shop. Starting tonight is Fall Break here at Snow college so I'm heading home tonight. Then tomorrow I'll be backpacking from my mom's house up the Canyon. Will be bringing my new gear on the trip to test them out. Normally I use Pie tins so this will be my first time testing out a 3" deep pan. Will post pictures when I get back and let you know how the setup worked.

I like a good fire when camping. If I were so concerned that I felt I had to use a fire pan though, I'd just eschew the dang fire all together, and fire up the Pocket Rocket stove.

Mine is an old Wok,shot a bunch of holes in it with my 22. works dandy.
