Low pressure ceramic belts?

i know from use the cubitron 2 and blaze belts definitely respond better to higher belt speed and heavy pressure. Anyone know of similar quality belt but with a lower pressure fracture rate? I never felt I got the best life out my cubitron 2’s. I don’t hog like crazy and prefer to grind on the slower side.

Saw the 3m 947a anyone have experience with that or recommend other belts?

Appreciate the help

I buy the 947A in 50 pc quantities. I use the 80 grit and primarily use them to finish grind heat treated steel. I run my grinder the fastest I can with a 3 step pulley but I dont use a lot of pressure. Ill still go through 4 belts to finish a kitchen knife but they do work...once they stop cutting the hardened steel they have plenty of life left to profile and rough grind bevels on annealed steel.

Me personally in the same use scenario I get much better results with the 984's. Maybe it's just the fact that my main grinder has a real high SFPM, I really thought I'd like the 947s better but I was never happy with them.

For hardened steel, I also have to add; most of the time the yellow 967s smoke both of the others, but they suck on non hardened steel or other soft materials, but you do need pretty good pressure and speed.

I have been using the yellow 967's to go from rough ground to 80% finished on hardened steel. I would like to achieve Natlek's results with ceramic belts but i suspect I need a better tracking higher powered belt grinder :)

Yeah there's definitely a difference, I used to prefer totally different belts back when I was less confident on the grinder, and had less HP and speed.

My primary now is 3hp with a 6" poly coated drive wheel running 3600rpm (2x jumper on vfd), and I've considered going to an 8" drive wheel. Honestly the speed seems more important, or at least helps make up, for the lack of machine pressure, with the higher end ceramics.

In this topic https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/belts-per-knife.1533832/page-4#post-17625615 I read very different experiences from knife makers/ with a million times more experience than me/ with belt longevity.Make me wonder ...........why ? Only difference with my experience with belt at first I thought was belt speed . Another thing I try/test was grinding free hand and grinding with jig .I found that when I grind free hand I can t put same/enough pressure to grind as I can grind with jig ...I notice that when I grind free hand I have more temp in blade and less removed material .I have no idea how and when ceramic break to expose new sharp edge .Maybe thy can t break on soft steel , maybe high speed and high pressure /with jig/ is reason that in my case last that long . But something is wrong when I grind free hand .All that may mind nothing , maybe that s only me and my modest skill with free hand grinding .The only thing that I am sure is that ceramic belts likes very high speed and no one on this world can convince me that's not true .........

Instead of making a separate thread thought I would bump this.

Would zirconia belts be the better buy for lighter pressure grinding?

I have plenty of cubitron 2’s for heavy hogging/profiling but my bevels I don’t use tons of pressure so curious would that be the better way to go with zirconia belts?

Appreciate the help guys.

Zirconia also require pressure for efficient grinding. Zirconia also generate more heat because the grains don’t fracture as sharp as ceramic. I can remember when zirconia was the best belt you could buy. They are more economical than ceramic of course.

I love my 984 II for hogging but felt like I don’t use enough pressure for the actual bevel grinding which is what I’m trying to figure out.

I actual make some nice grinds when I slow down, but too often I’m pushing too hard and belt is going to fast

Appreciate that about zirconia increasing heat.

I run 984s' slow, fast and in between. When they stop cutting good, I set em aside for profiling and junk work. But I do tend to hog fast and hard, then slow down for final precision.
