While researching this I found the REAL Hawk DOG knife. I wish I could find (and afford) one of those! That's a really cool knife! The only one I saw had sold for almost $800. Bummer.

Well, on my continuing quest, I bit the bullet and ordered a Spydie UK Penknife. Other than the locking thing, it looks like the perfect knife for me. If they ever make a locking one, I'll buy it in a second.

We'll see how the UK Penknife works out. I can't hurt to have in my collection and I can't see how it could be a bad knife to have.

The quest continues ('cause it's not a good quest if it ever ends!)

I was tempted to suggest a UK Penknife but I'm desperately trying not turn into a 'Penknife Evangelist'. It does ride very low. Let us know what you think of it!

That handle looks really weird. Is it comfortable?

Yeah, I guess the 420 looks a bit non-traditional. In my hands it's very comfortable, no hot spots and it's very easy to get ahold of. Far as I know it does have the thickest handle that Benchmade makes on a folder. It's pretty far from a small unobtrousive handle, but if you like big handles, this one is very well done.

In your last thread on that subject I recommended the BM (Mini-)Pika - what's wrong with it?

This is the folder with the most unobtrusive clip on the whole production knife market.
You want a tip-up folder, the Mini-Pika is a tip-up folder.
You want a blade around three inches, the Mini-Pika comes with a 2.9" blade (while the full-size Pika's blade is 3.5" long).
Its blade steel is good, its lock-up is solid and you could buy five of them and still stay well within the $125 you mentioned.
I think it qualifies as a "gentleman's tactical" and judging from your post, that's pretty much the style you want.

The only downside would be that it has a little blade play.

I will probably have to pick up a mini Pika at some point, but it's tip-down. That's my main problem with it. I may buy one just to steal the clip off and put it on my griptilian!

Thanks for the tip, I will be buying one, just not yet.

Whoa, my apologies. Of course it's tip-down - I mixed up the definition of tip-up and tip-down for a moment.

Sorry about that!

Spyderco UK Penknife if you can find one. Tip up, very low ride, S30V. Slipjoint but you will not miss the lock. Top notch.

Benchmade makes a 705 model knife that is top of the line. I have the 710HSSR as my EDC. The 705 series is less than three inches of blade and the clip can be changed from left to right and is configured for tip up carry.

the bm pika formerly the ascent formerly eclipse ? i have one of the 1st generation ones and the lock is the single crappiest lock i have encountered on a knife by a reputable company. the lock up, new and used, is so week you can break the blade loose by whacking the spine on the meat of you palm. i mean whacking your hand w/ about the amount of force you might apply to swatting a fly w/ a fly swatter. maybe a bad one, i don't know.
