It all appears the same...I picked up a 2x36" piece for $5, but it didin't say what kind of steel it is. All the employees gave me a deer in the headlights look. This will be my first knife, been reading a ton...anybody have any ideas what kind of steel is usually sold at these big box type stores?

Well, it will be ok to practice on but it won't be ok for a working knife.

It will be somewhere between 1018 and perhaps as high as 1030 but I wouldn't get your hopes up that it is even that high in carbon.

Get ahold of Aldo Bruno or Kelly Cupples here, or go check out Flatground.com or Admiral Steel. Get a bar of 1084 or 1070 to start with. If you decide you like it you can move on to more complicated steel.

Are you forging or doing stock removal?

Good practice steel but not good knife steel. I would listen to these guys and buy some good forgiving tool steel to try. kellyw

Hi friend,

You might want to fill out your profile so folks can tell where you're at. There very well may be someone in your neck of the woods who would be up for sharing a piece of better blade steel with you.

All the best, Phil

No Offense but obviously your reading material has been not the stickies here... One of the first ones there tells you it wont work. Found steel like leaf springs, panhard bars and bedframes is a PITA as well. since you still wont know what it actually is. Knowing what your steel is, is essential to performing the proper heat treat program for that steel. Kelly and Aldo are awesome to work with and have awesome products. please use them. But if you dont here is a list of reputable companies to buy good flatstock from
